2016 Scout here...I went with the Kohler brand oil that is manufactured for this motor. I found it at Tractor supply in the lawn mower parts section.
I figured that if i have any warranty issues with the 23horsepower motor they can’t tell me I used the wrong oil.

I might not be a very good mechanic, but 30 years as a lawyer...eh. This might be what you were referring to:
In a Consumer Alert issued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the agency confirmed that “The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void your warranty or deny coverage under the warranty simply because you used an aftermarket part.” The alert outlines key provisions in the law that provides protections to car owners. As defined by the FTC, an “aftermarket' part is a part made by a company other than the vehicle manufacturer or the original equipment manufacturer.”
“The FTC’s reference to aftermarket parts is equally applicable to specialty parts,” said Russ Deane, SEMA’s General Counsel. “Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the warranty cannot be conditioned to a specific brand of parts, services or vehicle modifications unless those parts or services are provided free of charge.”
The alert notes that a consumer has the right to patronize independent retail stores and repair shops for parts and service without fear of voiding the new car warranty. The dealer/vehicle manufacturer has the right to deny a warranty repair but they must demonstrate that the aftermarket part caused the problem. The warranty remains in effect for all other covered parts.
The FTC alert may be downloaded using this link.
The alert was issued in response to an FTC complaint filed last August by the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA), Automotive Oil Change Association (AOCA) and the Tire Industry Association (TIA).

Most manufacturers have a chart that describes what oil weight works in a temperature range. The temperature range for synthetic oils is much more broad than the narrow band of conventional oils. Having said that, I use a variety of synthetics: Mobil 1, Castrol syntec, Royal Purple, Rotella, etc. Whatever I get the best deal on is generally what I use. I also use a high quality filter and change it every time the oil gets changed.

I don't see the point of using more expensive, synthetic oil because mine needs to be changed so frequently. My oil smells of unburned gasoline and the oil level has gone up from condensation after the winter and so I change it early spring and late fall. Name brand 5w30 for the winter, 10w30 for the summer. I made the mistake of using cheap, store brand oil early in life and ended up having to clean out the oil passages in the motor (in my car not my Argo).

Avenger Bob: I think you have a fuel issue if the oil smells of gasoline. The oil level may be effected by that as well. It would be highly unusual for condensation to get into the crank case, the only scenario I can see is that if the machine is swamped, and water gets sucked into the intake or through the dipstick. I think your machine needs to be looked at by an expert to figure the problem out.

Thanks Noel,
The machine has never been swamped. I think the problem is caused by condensation in the fuel tank.
In the brutally cold part of winter (-31 Celsius) this has frozen in the valve that turns the fuel on and off at the carburetor and permitted raw fuel to run into the intake while the engine was stopped. I has also caused icing in the carburetor so the engine does not idle or develop full power in the cold.
I have mitigated the problem by installing a water separating fuel filter in the line, but the oil still smells of raw fuel by spring.
