  • 6x6 or 8x8?

It was suggested I post my question in this section of the forum so here is the repost:

Hi everybody! I am looking for my first Argo for working on my property. Much of the work will be in a river/large creek that has a bunch of deadfall trees that need clearing out. While I will attempt shoreline removal whenever possible, some of the trees would best be accessed in the water. River width can be as narrow as 12 feet in many stretches. How would the turning ability of the 6x6 be compared to the 8x8? This would be a 2 (or more) man operation with the "pilot" maneuvering the Argo to the tree to be cleared with the clearing crew in the back. I was thinking that the 8x8's larger rear compartment would make for a better working platform.

Is their a used vehicle buying guide faq that I could find on this site? Since I have ZERO working/practical knowledge of the 6x6 or 8x8 drivetrain and would like to know what to look for (common issues) when looking at a used machine.

In the meanwhile I will continue to peruse the site and see what info I can glean.

You’ve come to the right place for advice. I would also go see Doug at Fox Valley Argo Sales. Then you can get some hands on experience.
What it lacks in ground clearance it makes up for with traction.

I highly recommend an 8x8 Avenger for your project. Mrs. Coffinman & I used our beloved, "Snurf," to clean a creek of debris on several occasions. Be sure to get a winch to go with it!

An 8x8 would be much stabiler than a 6x6 with more than one person, you might consider a Frontier as some people have complained of the Avenger Admiral trans machines water performance.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
        Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

Def try and get some hands on experience with both transmission models. I personally have the admiral transmission in my 6x6 but have never used the conventional transmission. Personally I think the admiral thrives in the water. If you get water level where your nearly floating and only one side is touching bottom it can be hard to turn but drop the transmission into low and the counter rotation (as limited as it is) really helps make turns

I don't think you could go wrong with either a six or eight wheeler, standard or admiral transmission. The Admiral performs differently than the standard, but not necessarily in a bad way. A good deal on any machine is great to find. I noted Argo has got some promotional deals going on, so you should be able to find a package that works for you.

its a price point issue with the admiral, you pay more for it. It is hands down better in every way compared to the classic transmission. If people have trouble in steering the admiral in water then simply put it in low where it acts like the classic but is still better because it provides the power to both sides. You cant reach down hold a tire with you hand and stop a side like you can with the classic while floating.
