i have a 88 argo magnum with 18 hp kohler and it wont charge i have changed the rectifier and thats not it so im thinking it is the stator my question is should i take it apart and see what the stator looks like or should i just add an alternator to it and how much hp would it take to run a small alternator

I would try taking the flywheel apart and checking the permanent magnets used with the stator for the internal alternator. I had to replace one of my magnets in my 1884 17HP Kohler because it was broken. An easy thing to do.
