  • Frontier scout chain noise

I just bought 2017 argo 6x6 frontier scout, I was wondering is it normal to hear some chain noise as I am driving ? It is only when I turn a little left or right.

Depending on the hours on the machine or the maintenance performed it could be normal chain stretch. Get the tires off the ground and look at the chain adjusters for uptake to remove any slack.

Hard to say how much chain noise is normal but the short idler chains need to be kept pretty tight and had a tendency, on my standard tranny Argo, to loosen up after almost every long weekend ride. You have to loosen a couple of large nuts (1 5/16?) and snug up the chains with a couple of bolts and a 9/16 wrench. The spec for tightening the large nuts is in the manual but my memory is it was really tight. I used a 1/2 inch ratcheting torque wrench just to get the extra leverage. Hope this is some help.

Th spec for the idler chains is 1/8” deflection and yes, that’s tight!
In my opinion the idler chains are the “weak link” of these models...they seem to require adjustment more than they should. Love to try an Admiral model someday!

I would do as trevorakm1 said and jack machine up and use adjusters on mid and rear. Also as was mentioned, loosen trans bolt and adjust trans chains if needed. Not sure how much different it is to my 2009 Frontier but the fronts have no adjustment. Not sure how many hours you have on it or what kind of riding your doing but the fronts stretch pretty quick. The mid chains could be hitting floor board
