  • 1997 Argo Vanguard 2

Just scored a free 97 Argo Vanguard 2. It was neglected and sat out in the rain for IDK how long. Brakes seem to be locked or the chains are holding me back from any movements. I aired the tires up and that’s good for now. Any help on what to tackle first. Any info will help. This is my first Argo but has had all Dirtbike, trikes, quads and Jeeps so hopefully with a little help I can get this thing moving. The engine looks great so that should not be a problem. It’s missing a battery, so what’s my best replacement. My tires are holding air but would like to replace. Should I go back original or is there something bettter than the runamucks?

Start by removing the transmission chains and see what rolls, if a chain is locked up I would replace them all and start fresh however you may have a bearing issue additionally so check those. Sitting in water will kill moving parts quick.
Post a pic if you can of the innards.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

Haven’t had a chance to take any pictures. Going to take off the brake calipers tomorrow. The floor pans are rusted. The one over the driver position is pretty much completely rusted on all edges, the one in the back is rusted in the two corners. I was thinking of just welding in some cross pieces as support to take place of the floor pan. My question is why would you put a flat none draining floor pan in a vehicle that gets wet.

Hopefully the brake calipers are your issue for your sake, but doubt it.

The belly pan is there for frame stiffness and floor pan support, the pan drains at the rear corners. Generally the pan rusts from either water sitting inside or moisture from debris, mud etc trapped under the floor pans. My machine is a 2000 and still sports most all original paint and no rust unless it's under the belly pan, I keep my machine clean and everything is cleaned within a week of riding, machine only sits outside overnights when we are at an outing.

My daughters Bigfoot with belly pan and front tube replaced. The belly pan was so bad I was able to remove it in the machine as it crumbled back to the dirt it came from.

New belly pan, front tube, gas tank/seat mount frame.

What is the best way to remove the caliper? My dad is doing the work since I work a lot and he says the caliper comes off by lining up the hole in the disk and taking the whole caliper off. I said remove the four screws and break the caliper into two. Who is correct. He said the four screws won’t budge. But he doesn’t want the brake a possible $200 part.

Well poppped out cotter pin bleed off brakes and compressed calipers and it rolled ever so smooth. Now in to the engine. Don’t have a key so should I hack the ignition or is there a more humane way I plan on pull starting because I don’t have a battery. Any help will help.
              Thanks
