  • Outboard motor

Hello. Just bought my first Argo. It is a 2006 6x6 18 hp Koeler. I tried it with my 30lb thrust Minkota trolling motor. That clearly didn’t work. I know its rated for a 9.9 hp, but the price for those is around $800. I’m trying to find the middle ground. I would like to go faster than 2mph, but certainly am not in that much of a rush. I’ve seen 4hp for $200, but would that be much better then the trolling motor? I’ve also seen all the convoluted math out there to convert thrust to hp, but my God please could someone with a bit of experience, give me a simple answer. Do I need the 9.9hp or will a smaller engine work? Thank you

A smaller engine such as a 4-6 hp will work but my best advice is to get one of the OLD air cooled outboards that have the gas tank on top. If your using it mainly in the mud, because your standard outboards have a impeller and will suck up mud while your wheels or tracks are spinning.

      Goose,
I run a 5hp mariner long shaft on my 8x8, I average 4.5 mph with it.
I am contemplating purchasing a new 9.9 4-stroke, as I have used my 9.9 regular shaft with an overloaded capacity and averaged 7.6mph.

It might not seem like a big difference to most; however, a trip into my hunt camp is around 2 hours and 3/4 of the trip is across water. By doubling my water speed I can cut that time on water in half.

      Cheers

Did you ever try the 9.9 you mentioned?
I just bought an Aurora and want to put an outboard on.
Looking at weight a Merc 9.9 at 84lbs is almost 15lbs less than the Honda.
The 6HP is in the 54lb range

        Edit:

        I bought a 6HP 20" shaft Suzuki.
I'll update after it arrives and I get it broken in.
