  • Primary Clutch plate seperates and wedges against B & S engine

I just discovered my 2000 Response with 18HP B&S suffered catastrophic primary clutch failure (only 275 hours). Apparently the back plate separated and wedged against the engine stalling it and locking it up. I am glad it wasn't engine failure. But, just curious if this is a normal type of failure and consequence. I have changed oil, bearings, greased, etc with maintenance a high priority. But while setting up hunting stands it started making a squeeling noise intermittently and I tried to limp it back to the trailer when it just locked up.

Any suggests for future maintenance to avoid this?

    Thanks!

Okay, I just got the clutch back from the Argo/mechanic here in Michigan and the rear plate closest to the engine separated from the clutch hub but not completely. Any thoughts on how/why? Thanks in advance for any assistance!

I'd imagine fatigue may have set in as the aluminum face is pressed onto the steel hub, I guess it is possible that belt heat could have done it but my guess is just fatigue of old metals.

ARGOJIM thanks. I guess I wanted reassurance that like me it was older and weaker and served its time. But I have tried very hard to properly maintain a 2000 Response, and contrary to “a lot of opinions” it’s as easy or easier to maintain an Argo than a 4 x 4 or side by side. I have one that has character lines but runs strong, ice fishes Lake St. Clair, Saginaw Bay and goes deer hunting every year since I bought it in 2000 brand new. After this catastrophic failure though, I wanted some seasoned insight on cause of failure to prevent future problems for myself and others.

Now that I have a new primary, can anyone point me to a video or other informative sight on how and when to lubricate the primary and secondary clutches?

        Thanks everyone!

Check the clutch section of the Argo manual on home page, there is a listing.
