  • frontier 8x8 frontier 650

I'm looking seriously at a New Frontier 8x8 650, it has the upgraded 25" tires
it obviously has the older style transmission
how are these units , and with the 650 will it have the power to turn rubber tracks

I don't see any Frontier models with the 25" tires just the 24's.
I personally think the Frontiers are great bang for the buck models and would seriously consider buying one myself for another unit! I've seen one in action with 18" plastic supertracks and was very impressed with it's performance in every aspect.
For Rubber tracks I wouldn't doubt they would perform just as good if not better depending the conditions. What I would recommend depending on your planned usage is to go with the High Torque 3.3 trans though which will help a lot to keep the machine in High range when climbing over downed logs and trees if that's what you ride over? Makes it a lot easier on the belt to creep over obstacles at clutch engagement without slipping the belt all the time. You get better acceleration too with the High torque trans but loose a few KMH or MPH at top speed as a compensation.

The dealer ordered this air cooled frontier with 25" tires and I can get the unit for $19500 out the door Canadian with winch etc . I'm thinking of using it for exploring and moose hunting and taking my wife and young daughter with me. So want something reliable miles from the truck .ithas the standard transmission .would consider tracks for getting out ice fishing in winter.

Rubber tracks work amazing in the winter, they would be the track of choice for me as long as there are not too many long steep hills to climb up. That is one of the main traits I think other then climbing on ice my Escargo`s would beat out the Rubber tracks in winter.

Personally I would have preferred your machine with the 24inch tires without the High Torque trans and the rubber tracks but I`m sure you`ll be fine and more then happy with your setup. You always have low range anyways, you just might use it more often then you expect for normal tasks.

Thanks for the reply's. I was just worried the 23HP would struggle . But sounds like it should work ok.i will mostly run tires. And in winter I won't be running to many steep hills just usually a couple feet of snow at the most

if u have the right geared tranny the engine should have no trouble. the 25s are a good addition as well. there should be a a number representing the gearing of the tranny i know on the older its GU (low) MU (medium) and HU (high) but the new ones i think you get a 3.3 ratio for tracks and deep mud?

I have a 2015 750 EFI Frontier 8x8 with 3.3 transmission. Running channel wrap tracks. I have over 500 miles on the tracks. Works good. Rubber tracks are better in the snow. For muskeg with willow and black spruce the channels are dang good and put less stress on the drive train.

i was actuallu thinking of running the 14.5" wide adair tracks, as i doubt I'd ever be in over 3-4' of snow. I heard the 14.5" adair are decent in snow except deep powder

Sounds like a plan. Get whatever suits the conditions. Deep snow is for rubber tracks. My channels work but they are just paddling me along not keeping me on top.
Those adairs are supposed to swim well. That will be a bonus.

Also I upgraded to the 25 inch tire at the dealer.
