  • Guess I need to spend some money on it

    Hello, after running my 1990 Argo Magnum around the Colorado mountains (10,000 feet) for a year now , I need to replace all the slapping chains. The chain on these are double 50 I believe. Does anyone have any advice on a supplier of the chain and a cost estimate to replace all the chains.

    Thanks, Mark

    I have used double 50 from Shoup Mfg in my Reponse. They're in Illinois, was free shipping/no tax to Oklahoma, not sure about Colo shipping. Was about $105 for 10 ft rolls. Took exactly 4 rolls with no waste for the Response. Not sure if the Magnum will be the same. If you buy Shoup, get the US made, not the import.

      I've tried a couple different brands, and have had good luck with Tsubaki (not made in the US, as far as I know, but seems to work for me)
      I spend a fair bit of time on tracks, and haul, mostly, heavy loads. I've only ever broke a chain once, and that was totaly my fault. Dont remember the price, but up here in Northern CA it's about $130-150/ 10ft roll.
      I can get about 300-400 hrs on a set, depending on how much "Track Time" I put on.

      I have not tried "Shoup"
      Roger, does this chain have any specific advantages over others (other than being made in the US ......)

        Shoup was recommended by Jon Hoath who was an argo dealer. He thought it was good chain. I have read opinions that US tsubaki is better than Japanese tsubaki. I used Japanese tsubaki and it seemed to stretch quicker as compared to the factory DID chain that came on my Response in '97. The shoup chain I'm using is stretching up front, the back two axles are ok. But the second axle chain is on the bottom of the tub since I lowered the center axles, and now it runs in the dirt and water. Also upped the HP so I can't compare the shoup apples to apples to the previous chain. I checked shoup's web site, and Colo is free shipping. The price is $108 for 10ft.

          chain pitch question

          I took a look at the part manual for my 90 Argo Magnum and it has the RC50-2 chain in 3 different pitches; Front 44p, Mid 70P and rear 96P. I found some 50-2 chain locally in 10' rolls but it is 5/8' pitch. Will this work or do I need to find 3 different pitch sizes. I looked at shoup online and they seemed to only have the 5/8" pitch also. Thanks for any help on this.

            I bet that's how many links of chain.

            10 ft divided by 5/8" per link = 192 links

            your rear "96" as per manual would get 2 chains out of a 192 length.

            if you lay out a front, second, and a primary off the trans, see if that is ten foot or less.

              Chain Pitch is usually measured in inches, Examples: 1/4", 3/8", 5/8 and 3/4". It is the distance measured across 2 pins on the chain, or from point to point on a sprocket, IIRC.

              I suspect that what you are reading is the # of links you need for your chains.
              1- Idler shaft to front axle
              2- Idler shaft to second axle
              3- Second axle to 3rd axle

              You want the 5/8 pitch
              5/8"=.625"
              .625"x96=60"
              60"=5ft
              You need 5 ft of chain for your 3rd chain. ect, ect.

              Hope this helps

                  No, you just added to it, RD. Also, another guy recently posted about chain specs, the first # is 1/8's of an inch. 50 chain is '5' eighths.

                    thanks guys for the help

                    OK, I think I have it, so to do all of my Argo chains I would need 36' of chain or four 10' boxes. Has anyone used Allied Locke chain as I can get that for about $50 for a 10' box. It is US made.
