  • Avenger - Exhaust in cab

Hello, got my new argo out today and it ran great. Only complaint I have is I had exhaust and gas smell inside the passenger compartment. Anyone dealt with this? It is an 07 Avenger. I’m guessing a leaking exhaust gasket or cracked exhaust pipe. Any tips from anyone having dealt with this? Thanks in Advance!

Tighten up the exhaust connections? I don't have a fully enclosed cab but in thinking how to for my machine ,Carbon Monoxide detector would be a must. Anyone who pilot's small aircraft will tell you they are a necessity for safety. I also set my argo up with exhaust fans at the tailpipe outlet box , to draw out the excess heat, the other benefit of the exhaust fans is they draw out any fumes from the exhaust. I used two of the computer fans and are wired to a new switch that incorporates the brake fan also. It's a two position switch that the first detent is the exhaust fans and then turn switch to next detent and now the brake fan is on also. This allows me to control the electrical load while at idle so as to not drain the battery while still removing exhaust heat and fumes while sitting still. Hope this helps.

I'm going to be going through them. I've ordered new exhaust gaskets and will take apart the full exhaust to identify any areas that don't seal. I'll know more when they get here. I like the idea of a carbon monoxide detector. Hadn't really thought about that, but can see how that would be well served here.

Funny about the exhaust fan. That is the second time i've heard someone say they did that. I find it funny that this seems to be an issue, but Argo hasn't changed or implemented it. I also have 2 Argo Responses and I've never had this issue with either of those. It is definitely something I am going to be looking into more and figure out a good way to do it. Sounds like your suggestion is right on track with where I am going. I have some investigation to do on my Argo in general as the heater fan isn't working either. I ruled out the fuses, so I have to dig in more. Would be easy to add an exhaust fan here while working on the rest. What type of fan did you use? Any suggestions?

I measured the exhaust box and bought fans off ebay that would fit while fastened into the frame I made for them. Just computer fans. I added a bus bar and wire them to that and the switch I used also from ebay. The exhaust box, if that's what it is called, is slightly angled on the bigfoots anyway and I had to account for that while figuring out the frame size and then the fan size is determined for you.

Sounds good. I'll start looking into. I've got a pretty good idea of what you did.

I put the fans between the muffler and the exhaust box to grab as much heat from in the engine compartment as I could. I ran the tail pipe between the fans.

Your heater fan that isn't working---is it a fairly rare optional cab heater fan?. or the radiator cooling fan that runs by a belt from the engine. On newer Avengers the hood has a heat scoop. Avenger Argo sells scoop hoods but they are pricey. Mine came with the optional hood fan in the scoop. Hope you get your fume problems fixed. Would like to hear.

Yes, the fan I was speaking of is the option heater fan. The radiator fan works fine. Mine doesn't have a hood scoop. I can't warrant that kind of money for a scoop. I think the blower motor next to the exhaust being a good solution, other than determining if there is an exhaust leak. I'm hoping to work on it this weekend and get this issue fixed. Work unfortunately got in the way.

I wanted to update the thread on this issue. I've inspected everything under the hood looking for the exhaust issue. I've ruled out that there is no leak in the exhaust piping or where it connects to the block. At this point, I believe the exhaust is back feeding into the engine compartment and the brake cooling system (where the fan runs all the time) is pushing the exhaust into the cab. As a result, I am going to take suggestions from several on here and try the following things.
                  1. I am going to cut vents into my hood and add screen to give it a finished look. The thought here is that this might help with air circulation in the engine compartment.
                  2. I am going to add a switch and relay to the exhaust cooling fans so it doesn't have to run all of the time.
                  3. I am going to add a marine engine compartment blower and plumb it out through the exhaust box. The second option is to add the fan to the top of the hood similar to Argo's aftermarket hood scoop fan.

I am hoping that these three measures solve the exhaust issue. I'll update again once I get these completed.

interesting. Keep the exhaust fans running while engine running and brake fan when anctually driving. I also cut a hole in my hood that is rectangular and hinged. I used parts from home depot for microwave oven exhaust that is mounted on the side of the house. it has a spring tensioned flap and I used that frame to make a piano hinged vent I can have open or closed. It faces foward and adds extra air flow into the engine compartment. My bigfoot is the gren version and Krylon has a spraypaint almost exactly the same color as the body, lucky. I think it's visible in the gallery photos.
