  • 18hp Kohler magnum governor problem.

    I changed the engines out, the old one was pretty worn, and this one has good power, but going down the road it backs off the throttle. I adjusted the gov by the book and it was a little better, then I move the springs for a quicker throttle response (per the book) but I don't think I'm getting the 3500 rpm (max rpm per the manual) and it is slower than the old engine. The gov was stuck, when I went to hook up the linkages and I wiggled it some and it came free, don't know if that is related or not. Also, I hooked up my timing light and it shows over 2200 rpm at idle, which I know it is under 1000 so I'm guessing you can't use a timing light on these to check the rpm? maybe the spark plug wire is different? Looking for advice....

    Each plug wire will fire with every revolution of the engine as the magnet on the flywheel passes the pickup. This means that the plug also fires on the exhaust stroke. just cut whatever the timing light reads in half

      Thanks, so that means my max rpm of 5300 is only 2650 rpm, so how do I get it higher? I have moved the spring to the end of the shafts (end hole on the gov shaft and bottom hole on the carb shaft) which helped only a little.
      When I installed this engine the gov was stuck and I had to work it free, wonder if that had anything to do with the rpm backing off.

        Typically it is a matter of bending the governor arm (SLIGHTLY). follow the linkage from the carb back to the governor assembly. Next locate the spring closest to that and bend it's tab a little bit. try removing some spring tension, if that makes it worse, go a little bit the other direction
