  • Magnum Brake Caliper

    Folks,

Looking for advice and recommendations on replacement calipers for a Magnum.

I am struggling with the left brake, just will not engage like the right-hand one despite having rebuilt the caliper + master cylinder, replaced the brake hose and also the brake pads. This happens even when the brakes are completely cold.

I should mention the brake cooling shroud had, completely melted down and certainly, these brakes overheated at some point no doubt. Brake cooling system has been completely overhauled now.

I've bled the brake numerous times but am not sure this is 100%... seem to get a lot of bubbles which could be coming in from around the bleeder screw.

At this point, my option seems to be a new caliper (which is no longer available correct?). Questions:

    1. Has anyone experienced a similar issue which was resolved by simply replacing the bleeder screw?

    2. What is everyone using to replace the 166-02 brake caliper? This seems to be superseded to a newer caliper but I wondered if there was a better (less costly) solution to what I am finding from Argo.

Many thanks for the sound advice from this group!

    Hi Charlie

Did you replace the ball under the bleed screw? I rebuilt the calipers on an '85 and the balls were badly pitted.

Can you retrofit a motorbike caliper on instead? I think ill have this same issue as well.

        Hi Bob

I did not replace the ball. In hindsight, this should have been an obvious next step after rebuilding the caliper but it appeared ok. In the end, I sourced a used replacement caliper and, after fighting to bleed it properly, I think I now have it solved!

Thanks for the insight. I have saved the old caliper and will consider trying a new ball and bleed screw in it shall I need it in the future.

I'm glad to hear that you've found a replacement caliper - here's hoping the issue is solved!
