why is that some machines start up and idle fine despite being cold and some need to keep 1/8 throttle to stay idling or it dies when its cold. im talking about carbed engines. im asking a broad question no specific engine or type just why it is.

I haven't needed to use my choke at all since I bought the Vegas karts 3 circuit carb and opened up the Jets and emulsion tube. The old carb even after rejetting I had to choke and work the throttle every time before it would idle on its own. I guess the air fuel mixture, if running a stock carb it's probably on the lean side. There's more variables I'm sure, maybe timing would affect cold starts.
This Vegas carb even after running the bowl dry I just open the valve and a couple blips of the throttle while cranking it will start right up and sit and idle on its own. I shut the gas off and let it kill itself idling Everytime I'm done running it.DanW
