  • argo HDI engine removal

im going to pull all my axles and check all the bearings, chain and sprockets.this job has got to be easier to do with the engine removed.what kind of a job is it to remove the engine?ive got chain falls in the garage so the actual lift will be easy and once its out the alternator/fan belt will be an easy thing to change as well.

    thanks

Clutch has to come off to clear the exhaust shroud. 4 mount nuts not to bad to get off. Can’t remember if muffler comes off or not. I do axles all the time with engine in. Usually takes me about 4 hours to pull engine and reinstall.

so ive got the engine out and sitting on the floor.argo should be ashamed of themselves regarding the wiring on this machine, there is without a word of a lie wires everywhere.other then dealing with the wire mess the job was not to bad.while the engine is out im gonna change the fan and alternator belt.my question is how does one remove the fan belt and adjust its tension?does the rad have to be removed?i don't see any adjustment on it.

        thanks

Sorry to hear you had such an issue, there may be less wiring needed to be tackled than you got into?
No there really not bad to get out, removal of muffler and heat shielding let's it come out easy, once wiring is addressed.
I believe you can just loosen the fan support and shroud and remove the belt.

On a side note I pulled my LH775efi out and replaced it with a LH690, changed the whole wiring harness, fuel tank and fuel system on Saturday turning this HDI into a HD. I had been laid up for 3 months with a pulled groin and did not have time or funds to mess with the fuel issues I was having, to have ready for the Busco gathering.

thanks jim, will mess with it after work tomorrow.still waiting for the belt and bearings to arrive.just getting things cleaned and loosend up.having long thin arms would be a definite asset for working on these turkeys.i hope your groin gets better, man that's gotta hurt like hell.

got everything back together last weekend argojim.installed all new 50-2 chains and bearings for the 2 front axles.on the rear axles both outer bearings were stuck on had to air chisel them off.replaced them with aftermarmarket RBL bearings, they are a lot cheaper then OEM.washed all the running gear in parts washer then re assembled.found a few set screws that were doing nothing.always wondered why the machine has a weird engine sound.one manifold gasket was missing, found 3 of them in the tub.changed both the alternator belt and fan belt as well while engine was out.put all new tensioner pucks in,changed the oil and now im good to go.machine feels smoother and much quieter.never found 1 bad bearing, looks like some of the grease actually went into the small grease hole on bearings.only issue I have left is that sometimes when starting athe solenoid only clicks but does not engage starter.i suspect a voltage loss problem on the green wire from the key switch. I did wire in a relay to assist the starter and that worked, but that added more wires and looked like a place to fail so I removed it.i wonder if a heavier wire from the key switch would solve the problem?????

                thanks
