  • Does Upgrading from 24" to 25" Tires Help Flotation?

    Hey All

I am about to pick up my new 2020 Frontier 6x6. I upgraded to 25" Argo swim tires as I wanted the extra ground clearance and the 2020 Frontier 600 6x6 can run both 25" and rubber tracks.

A couple people have told me the 25" tires provide a noticeable improvement in flotation in water. Is this true?

My experience says that the higher a machine sits in the water with all other things being equal the greater the machines swim speed, the 25 inch Argo tire is an excellent swimmer, since the 25 inch tire is larger and holds more air the machine should float higher in the water, my bet is another 1/2 MPH added to your swim speed. I have seen forum members at Busco with the 25 inch Argo tire on there 6x6 Frontier and they had a very good swim speed, they also increased the mobility of the machine in mud. The Only tires I have seen preforming better in the mud than the 25 inch Argo tires are ASX equipped MaxIV's (Mike) OR A COUPLE of MavIV's with Aqua Torque tires. I have never seen anything faster in the water than an Argo 8x8 or a MaxIV with 26 inch Terra Tires.

Not to high jack the thread but, Hey Dan. Good to see you still come by here. Seems many members left shortly after Mike stepped back. I always enjoyed your videos and your testing ,experimenting and so forth.

It's been awhile, I am considering another Argo, I do not want to tell you which one, just waiting for all this virus nonsense to blow over, I own my own truck and specialize in import and export tanks, my work is a little slower, but I still travel all over the East coast and so far what I have seen is pure over reaction, I am ready for them to drop this nonsense and put everyone back to work.

How would you compare the 25 inch Argo tire with the Vendetta's you had. I came within a hair of getting a new Argo with 25 inch tire upgrade. Then Corona happened & put just about everything back by at least a year, so I'm still trying to do as much research as possible.

Vendetta's stayed on top of clay type mud and worked well there, in soupy mud they weren't all that great. The 16 inch wide Vendetta's don't swim as well as the 12 or 14" VENDETTA. In bush or reeds those Vendetta tires bite like a track and I have not seen a tire that will match them, they also ride very well, SO THE ANSWER IS? Depends on where you are running, if you are going to run tracks THEY will work better ON 24" TIRES. As far as the 25" tire on the Argo Frontier like every thing they seem to be the best compromise if you are not going to run tracks, they keep the machine a little more narrow for tight trails, ride good, decent in mud and swim well.

I see that mightymaxIV says that an Argo 8x8 does well in water with 26'' "Terra Tires". What would be some examples of this style of tire? I can see that the 26'' tires seem to come in a 26x12x12 size.
                  Thank you
