  • Argo with military engine

Total noob here. I have a chance to purchase what is being sold as an Argo vanguard with a four banger military engine. Ad says, ran when parked, battery dead. Asking price is $1500. I can turn a wrench, but I have never opened an engine. Are there specific trouble points to look for? Can it be a simple as a jump and a new battery? how hard are these things to maintain, and what about parts availability? I own a snowdog machine, and that's so basic I do all my own work on it. On the other hand, I also own a pair of Euro bikes where everything is computer controlled and an oil change is a dealer trip and minimum of $200 for the experience. I'd rather stay away from that.

    Thanks,
    Jon

My advice is to take some jumper cables and try to start it, If it wont start negotiate a lower price and replace the engine with a 1" horizontal shaft honda clone. Like a predator from harbor freight https://www.harborfreight.com/22-HP-...hoC56kQAvD_BwE $1500 is to much for an older non-running machine. Because its been sitting expect to replace fuel line, clean the tank, replace bearings, and roller chain

Welcome Jonthecarver. Do you know what kind of engine it is? Gas or diesel?

Pretty sure it's gas. I'm thinking of not biting. I don't need another time suck or money hole. I have plenty of toys already.

Bearings and chain sound like it's not worth the fifteen hundred. There was another one that I saw last summer with a Kohler twin. Manifold looked like swiss cheese and it had been so well taken care of that there was grass growing inside the tub. He wanted 3250 for that one. Again, hard pass.
