  • New Tracks with Worn Tires

    Hello all,

I have a 1996 Argo Response 8x8 with the original 22" tires. The machine came with worn out standard tracks so I bought new TruTrax tracks. The tires on all corners of the machine are worn with most of the tread gone on top, effectively making them a smaller diameter tire. Should I keep these tires on all four corners, or move them in the middle, when I install the new tracks? I believe if they are in the middle, it may be easier on the chains, acting similar to the adair track tuners? However, it appears that Argo recommends putting the smaller tires on each corner. All tires seem to slowly lose air.

    Thank you for your help.

Congrats on the new tracks! Put the tires with the best tread on the corners with the smallest of the four in front and the larger ones in the rear.Your corner tires are your "sprockets" that do most of the track turning. The plastic tracks are much more forgiving on varying tire sizes and the center four bald tires will slip easily when needed. You can adjust the corner tire pressure to get proper track tension. I will tell you that leaking tires in a track system is a recipe for disaster and make it easier for the tires to walk out of the tracks. There are a lot of cheap tire options out there that will work in the Tru Traxs so I would advise getting some new tires when you can.

What are going to do with your old tracks? I might be interested in them.

        thorn,
Thanks for the reply. I currently have bald tires at the front position, and 2nd baldest at the rear. The tires with the most tread are already in the middle. Should I keep it this way? If you have any recommendations for cheaper tires I am all ears. The cheapest I have found seem to be $170 a pair or $300 a pair with 8" wide rims.

          mfenmor,
I currently do not have plans for the old tracks. They are original argo 13" plastic tracks that are well worn.

Put the tires with the best tread on the corners and the baldest ones in the middle. These:Ocelot Cross Country 4-Ply Modified V-Tread Utility ATV Tire 22X11-8 P308 are $50 each shipped on Amazon. This combo chevron/knob tread is a popular replacement style on Argos. The 21x11x8 AT-101 is also popular at around $67 each. Search the tire and track section on this site for more info.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will try to run my current runamuks and see if I can get by. Maybe some tire slime will slow the leak. When it is time for new tires, should I look into purchasing new rims as well?

Yes on new rims if you can swing it or you can put a wire wheel to the bead areas and get any rust off and then repaint them.

Reporting back to say that the new tracks are working great with the older tires. I aired up each tire to 5 psi. There is no slip and they do not seem too tight.
