  • Ignition Switch Replacement

    Greetings!

My 2005 Avenger is having issues while starting. It will click and/or do nothing when I turn the key. The battery is good, and fully charged. I have noticed that there seems to be a "sweet-spot" when the key is turned that will allow the starter to engage. I don't thing it's the relay or starter, so I ordered a new switch from Argo Adventures and hope to swap it out this weekend. It seems pretty straight forward, but is there anything I need to keep in mind while doing so?

    Thanks!

Is replacing the key-switch difficult, or is it like a "plug-in" module? I've not done it before, and can't find any vids or instructions in the repair manual.

Put your key on and try to short out your two solenoid posts. If your starter solenoid is on top of your starter like mine was before I relocated it ..good luck..its hard to get at..but your not really doing it to completely start it but just to see if it turns over the engine. If it does it's your solenoid.they only seem to last me about 4 years.. fairly easy to change out esp if your ever played the old game operation..lol
Good luck. Does yours have a Briggs and stratton engine?

Thanks for the info, jhayden. Mine has the Kohler 26hp. I've looked at the switch I ordered, and it seems to have several spade links on the back. I thought it would be a good, inexspensive start for trouble shooting the problem. We'll see how it works. If not, it's off to the mechanic for a new solenoid and/or starter. I have too much nerve damage in my hands to do it myself.

Solenoids are dirt cheap esp in the states! That switch you just ordered up here in canaduh costs 50 dollars plus shipping. Dont buy any other parts till you narrow it down. Have you adjusted valves yet. That can make it hard for the starter to crank it over...but it usually be more then just a click sound . Did u check your thick red wire going from solenoid to starter? If that came loose it might just click. Check battery connections too..they have to be tight..
And again this is what I learned the hard way with my bs vanguard motor..

The new ignition switch didn't solve the problem, so I ordered a new starter/solenoid from Argo Adventures. When it arrives, I'll take it to my mechanic for installation. Thanks for your help.
