Im working on a 1999 argo conquest what type of oil do you guys run in the tranny? and do you reccommend a synthetic?

  • #2
    no synthetics

don't use synthetic oils, they are too slippery for the friction material inside the tranny. I am not sure what trans your machine has, most guys run ATF type F in the t-20 tranny, and some guys run dexron ATF in them. If you know which transmission you have, you should post it, and I'm sure someone will let you know the correct fluid. My machine has the t-20, and I am running dexron.
I don't want to go fast, I just want to go anywhere.

argo recomends 75/90 gear oil. the argo trans is a differential type, so there is no friction material. my dealer told me to use nonsynthetic

          For my 2004 Conquest

          Winter
          I use synthetic AMSOIL

          Summer
I use 75/90 gear oil with TRANSX Posi-Trac "Limited Slip Diff Oil Additive"

I would use synthetic all the time, but regular oil is cheaper for the summer (usually end up changing the oil 2 or 3 times per summer)

PS, I have heard that Argo does NOT recommend Synthetics, but have never heard a satisfactory answer as to WHY.

Holly crap you change your transmission oil 2 or 3 times per summer (how come?). I put synthetic in mine in may and have had no problems. There was very little metal on the drain plug magnet when i changed it. This Amsoil what is it, a gear oil, and what weight do you reccomend. SHould i be changing mine more often.

It depends on Hours and Conditions. I believe that I use my Argo harder than most guys (Maybe not), and I think that fluids are cheap (I get MOST of mine free), so I don't mind changing oil a little more often.
I change the oil in the Spring due to the number of cold starts through the winter and possible water condensation.
I change it in the fall due to the # of hours. If I put lots of hours on through the Summer, I might change it as well halfway through the Summer.

IMHO, metal on the drain plug magnet is only ONE indicator of when the oil needs changing. (In fact, metal shavings on the magnet are more of an indication of internal problems).
Other factors: Anti-Wear Additives, Anti-foam, emulsifiers, EP aditives, anti- corrosion, Detergent, Viscosity modifiers, Dispersants, ect......

Amsoil is a brand name, fully synthetic oils/lubricants. I only use it in the winter, as it costs too much. I use Castrol, Quaker, or any other quality mineral based gear oil in the summer (with TRANSX Posi-Trac "Limited Slip Diff Oil Additive")

I don't know how often you change your oil, but I think the manual recommends 50hrs

(Where I work, we have alot of rotating equipment, and send many oil samples out for analysis. Over time I have built my own opinions about how often I change my oils. Right or Wrong haha.)

I may get inspired to pull the plug on my response's tranny.. been about 6 years. Changed it twice, once when very new.. lots of metal on the plug as per average straight cut argo tranny nonsense. Then again after a year or so, magnet was clean as a whistle. Refilled with a synthetic and nothing done since.

Engine oil.. different story. As hard as I spin it, fuel dilution, etc, it gets changed probably every 10 hours. Those are hard hours. Oil filter too of course, but not one with briggs printed on it.

Thanks for the info. I now know i am going to change my transmission oil more often than every 5o hours. I did not know that the oil needed to have a limited slip additive.
