  • 77 Argo brakes and exhaust help.

    I knew i had an exhaust leak, but I wasn't expecting to find the mess shown in the pics below. How do I clamp the muffler to the engine? It can't be reached with the engine cover in place.

    Also, my brakes are way out of adjustment, but there is no compression spring, just washers.

    Comments welcome, and there are more pics in my gallery if you need a different look.

    all you need are some 1 1/4 or 1 1/2(cant remember the correct size) exhaust clamps.Slide the exhaust pipe over the engine ports and tighten clamps tight.

      Hi Eddie,

      I know I need exhaust clamps. I don't see how they can be tightened when the engine cover is in place. If it's just another knuckle-buster because of the tight space, I'll get them on eventually. I thought there might be an easier way.

      Edit to add: A search just help me with my exhaust question. It's a loose fit that expands when hot to seal the pipes.


      My manual doesn't match what I see on this Argo. My serial number is in the 1300's, but my manual covers later models (or at least serial numbers starting in the 5000 range). Is this common?

        if you post or PM me your Email addy ill send the brake adjust and parts pages for vangard mech. brakes.should get you in the right direction.when adjusting make sure they apply in a vee.if you get it wrong the pad "holder "will break.Dont ask!LOL

          I ordered a new set of brakes from Richard's Relics. Mine were in bad shape with lots of corrosion and rust. The bolts that hold the assembly together were bent beyond repair. I'm guessing they must get really hot to deform the way they did.

          I have another question. The sprockets on the axle that drive the second wheel from the front are not the same size. Can this work? It doesn't look right to me. It looks like it was repaired or replaced with the wrong size sprocket.

            Hi Tinodesis

            What you are looking at is OK, (as best I can tell from the pics, and description). I might be missing something here
            I think you are looking at the smaller sprocket on the idler shaft going to a medium sprocket on the second axle. Then from there a larger sprocket drives to the back axles (All sprockets from this one back are the same size as this one?).
            All this is fine, as long as the sprocket on the front axle is the same size as the "medium" sized one on your second axle (the one being driven from the idler shaft).

            Of course both sides of the Argo should be the same setup, and all wheels need to turn at the same RPM.

            I hope this makes sence, I kinda confused myself writing it

              the sprocket tooth count differs from drive to driven(smaller drives bigger).so long as the tooth count is the same from side to side and location front to back.my parts manual shows different counts bye serial #,so its possible someone may have replaced a sprocket with a wrong count!a micrometer may be easier to check the diamiters are the same side to side.i hate trying to figure out what some one has done in the past!!

                Here is a better look at my sprockets.

                The sprocket on the end of the idler shaft is 2 3/4" dia. with 13 teeth.

                The sprocket on the front axle is a 5" dia. with 24 teeth.

                The sprocket(s) on the second axle are a 5" 24 tooth and a 4" 24 tooth. From there back, all sprockets a 4" 24 tooth.

                Is tis correct?
