  • First post - Good Evening Everyone

I found this fantastic site while looking for info on Argos. I Moose hunt in northern Manitoba,Canada and I,m tired of winching 4 wheelers through muskeg swamp. I haven't decided on a new or used machine, or which model to purchase. I have looked at a new Frontier 650 6x6 and the 650 8x8.
Also a 1991 magnum 8x8. These machines come with vast differences in price.
Disreguarding price any info on the performance of these machines would be appreciated.
    1) Does the 1991 magnum have sheer pins and are they a problem?
    2) Is the 650 8x8 with tracks superior in snow to the 650 6x6 with tracks?

I hope to have a machine in the garage by February so I will be ready for ice fishing in March. It's -29 degrees celsius in Winnipeg,Manitoba,Canada tonight
so I am in no rush to be out on the lakes.

            Interesting machine

I don't know how the hydro would work in extreme cold. The dealer is in Ontario which is a 24hr round trip from Winnipeg, so service would be a problem. Winnipeg has 2 argo dealerships, one 20 minutes from my house, so that's the main reason I'm looking at their product.

I am amazed at what the Mudd-Ox can do with those 20 inch tracks. Crossing those logs that were side by side, and the height of some of them , would have given an amphib with out tracks fits , just trying to drive over all of them in a row. That was an impressive stunt.

Hi B.A. welcome to the site, to answer your questions a '91 Magnum has the splined axles and a great machine if its turn key ready to play for a reasonable price. as for the 6x6 vs the 8x8 with tracks it has been discussed before and they both work very well, the 8x8 might have a bit more flotation and extra room but the 6x6 seems to turn a bit easier in the snow. as for tracks alot of guys take Argo super tracks and extend them out to 24 inches for superior tracktion and flotation, here's a pic of a set of 24's

                  hope this helps

                    eightwheeler ,

Those are some really aggressive tracks on that Argo. Are those Escargo tracks?

                      Hey 8whlr,

How wide does that make your machine?

No those are not escargo tracks, they are factory Argo 18" super tracks extended with 4" belt , takes a long time to make a set but well well worth it, only problem is i heard Argo is discontinuing the plastic tracks only offering the rubber style which cannot be extended, makes the machine around 7' wide lol

                          Hi BA
Welcome to the site, you're going to like it here

I noticed that you never listed Conquests as a possible option. That's what I run, and have had fantastic luck with. If you can find one at a good price, it would be worth looking at. I run VERY similar terrain to what you probably run in.

Hi B.A. Welcome to the Forum. I don't think the hydrolic fluid would be effected enough by severe cold, untill you got to extremes you probably wouldn't ride in anyway. -40ÂșC or lower would not suprise me. But Matt-O would know better what the service limit would be. So now, out of curiosity, how about it Matt, what are those fluids rated to before they turn to goo?

                              Hi Rock Doctor,
I open to a conquest. I've been surfing the net looking for good used machines without finding any possible candidates. I'm waiting to hear from the guy with the magnum but there was a lot of interest in the machine so it may be gone. I am leaning towards a new frontier 650 8x8. If anyone has any info on these machines I'd like to hear from you.
