  • Thinking about an argo

An 8x8 argo popped up in BC for sale and it is from the 1970's. The engine is not in it, but the engine is included. It was re-built but never put back after it stopped working. Its supposed to have 350 cc 2 stroke. So what i'm wondering is what kind of engine would this be? Who makes it?

Are there any things we should particularly look at when we are going to look at it? I cant just rely on the fact he sais the engine isnt in it and thats why it wont run. Obviously we cant put the engine back in where it is located and see if it runs. As far as i'v heard it is fairly easy to install. But would there be anything we should be looking at? Obviously dont want something thats worn out and un-repairable.

It comes with tracks which would be awesome as well.

This would probably be a new toy to tinker with and enjoy and wouldnt be used for hunting or anything of the sort. Just for fun on trails.

How fast approximately will this thing go with the current engine? We may look for a upgrade if we pick it up if it doesnt have the juice. It would be amazing in the snow falls we have had this season, up to 2 ft sometimes, but unlike a snowmowbile could be used in the summer!

    Thanks

    argo

the engine that comes in those are OH16 Tecumseh and are cast blocks, they are 4 stroke also not 2 stroke, i would double check that becuase if someone put a 2 stroke in it they probably chopped up the mounting skid or something to make one fit right, i have to ask what your going to pay for it the way it is with tracks ? any help just email me i have the manuals for them. ty

Hi guys, the early Argo's had 2 stroke engines in them and they were pretty fast compared to the 16 hp 4 stroke Tecumseh engines. If I remember right they were in the 250 to 300 cc range. I can't remember right now what the the company name was, but I am sure there is somone here that will be able to tell us.

I believe that some early Argos ran a Kohler 2 cylinder 2 stroke......maybe a 400cc or 440cc. These were indeed some pretty quick machines. There might have been some other engines too, but I can't remember off hand.

I was browsing through the brochure section of 6x6World and another engine used was the 440cc CCW 2 cylinder 2 stroke. I remember seeing one of these Argos run in an obstacle course before I had really seen that many performance machines and I couldn't believe how quick it was for an Argo.

Hey guys, 6by64me is right. I looked up some historical pieces and they used the Koehler 2 strokes. In 1975 they changed over to the Tecumseh 16 hp 4 stroke. When I was younger, one of my neighbours had a 6x6 with the 2 stroke and man did it fly.

Yes my 6x6 has the 339 Kohler and it is a 2 stroke twin, the Model TB models have the Tecumseh OH16, both my 8x8 have this engine and i rebuilt both of them. very heavy duty engines.
