  • Gear oil for Argo conquest transmission

I have a 2004 conquest, does the gear oil for the transmission need to have a "limited slip diff oil additive" ? Is that what argo specifies when it says in the manual "HYPOID-C 80/90 weight"?

Just my opinion, but i suggest going to AMSOIL fluid. It already meets the spec, and has far better lubrication properties.

I always suspected AMSOIL of being snake oil, but tried it out last year. Now it's in every vehicle i have!

      interesting

I just changed my oil out last night and was thinking the same thing. I used valvoline synthetic blend.. the back said it was for limited slips. I hope some one chimes in.

The Argo transmissions do not have clutches in them and do not require the limited slip additive.

The first time I changed mine, I couldn't find anyone to explain what properties "hypoy C" had. I bought Castrol gear oil with the hypoy C designation.

I don't see any need for a limited slip fluid, as there are no clutch plates in the argo trans. A GL5 gear oil is rated for limited slip car differentials already. I like synthetic gear oil 'cause I think it handles heat better, and stays thinner at lower temps. Rock Doctor uses a limited slip additive, he has some experiences and opinions on lubricants..

Argo Trans have no "friction plates" or "clutches" inside them, they are a simple open type differential.

As was already mentioned, Amsoil alone is perfectly fine, although Argo does NOT recomend it.
Also, almost any GL-5 rated mineral based gear oil is acceptable. When I use mineral oil, I LIKE to add the Limited slip additive, but it is not NEEDED. I do it becouse of the high EP loads on the gears, also it quiets the trans noise a bit, it redices "foaming", and it can help keep min oil from breaking down.
