lets just say im new and going through very painfully the ropes.I had to buy some kind of atv for hunting and wanted an argo for years .never could afford a new one, looked for months and they were always above 8 grand for a decent used unit, along comes one in an ad for 4 grand, the price i was willing to pay for a used atv,it came with tracks and a top, bilge and heater winch and was supposed to be a 96,after driving it i wanted it,was the closest i came to the price i could afford, got it home and had trouble trying to register it,all came was with a bill of sale,in ontario we now have to register them, well the seats in back turned out rotted same with the driver seat,it ran fine untill it got low on gas and would not starte.had a friend come over and he removed the carb and was full of yellow powder, old gas,and all kinds of leaves in the tank,i am now in the process of cleaning the tank, cleaning up the wiring, added a rear winch, the underside has huge gouges,it said it had the skid plate when checked only the half skid plate, icalled argo and they sent me papers that say its a 86 kb model, cant cry over spilled milk, anyways im in the middle of putting it together and sure learn a lot from you guys,im considering of upgrading my 18 hp kohler magnum

was told by opp that my argo has to be registered ,insured, wear helmet on all crown properties,i dont think you need for private but to use on trails and lakes thats what was told to me,im in markham and am heading out to simcoe for ice fishing , i have heard reports of fines for no helmets or registration even no chin strap, i also could not find it in any litrature but was told that by several opp ,mnr and a few buddies on the lake,i also just read it in some posts.

Welcome to the site argotrax!
I can relate to your situation. I purchased a '77 KB a few months ago and it needs more work than I expected. I paid $2500 for mine, including the trailer, and have been spending money replacing parts just to get it back in running condition. I'm not complaining because when it's rebuilt I will be familiar the entire machine.
Good luck with your project, and like you, I feel this site has been a fantastic resource for advice and information.

Registration
Argotrax is correct about your machine having to be registered in Ontario if driven on crown land or frozen lake. I have been checked many times on lake st.clair while ice fishing by OPP,chatham-kent police and MNR. I had to provide proof of insurance and ownership. Same licence plate as on a quad. I believe Argo had an article on their website that they have been reclassified approx 2 years ago. Also was told the same at the licence office.

how hard was it registering i ggot the letter from argo and when i went to mto they wanted a lawyers letter saying i owned it even though i had a bill of sale with it,insurance was quoted at 300 dollers thats not theft or fire or collision just the basic, the machine is running now and i got a line on a full length skid plate to cover all scratches and bumps also located no flotes as mine are badly warped and previous owner cut it up will post pics when i get finished, ive got a whole set of all manuals that came with machine including all engine opps and accersory instalation manuals anybody that needs part numbers or diagrams including wiring im more than happey to help, might be a good idea to scan all pages and uses as a stickey for quick refrence for anybody just tell me how to do it,anything i can help with

Argotrax: I lucked out registering my machine as it was origanally sold in Quebec where I believe registrations were manditory. I'm the third owner and the former owner kept all the original papers which included an ownership from Quebec which made the registration no problem. At the MTO they said that any vehicle (old snowmobiles, antique cars, argos, etc.) that don't have a ownership the owner requires an affidavit from a lawyer stating that you are the legal owner and the vehicle is not stolen etc. Also when it is registered you have to pay tax on the value of the machine. Hope this info helps...

Lawyers?
I am amazed that you have to get a lawyer to prove you own the argo. Is theft that bad of a problem that they make you get involved with the legal system just to get a license plate. I guess I got it pretty easy here. I give the state 35 dollars and they give me a plate and a registration. I only need a bill of sale.

I don't need proof of ownership (Still a good idea to keep your recept though)
I don't need insurance
Don't need registration/plate
Don't need a lawyer
Don't need ROPS
Don't need helmets
Don't need a boating licence
Don't need to stay on private land
ECT
ECT
I'm not saying any of these things are bad, and I'm NOT trying to be a SMARTA$$, but WOW..........All I need is the "key"
Maybe I really do live in "Backwoods, hicktown, northern Canada"

RD you are very lucky to be able to live where you live. Here in southwestern Ontario crown land (public) is pretty well nonexistent. Nearest areas with crown land is approx 5 hr. drive from here. When ice fishing it is considered public property on the lake so we have to abide by the laws if we want to use are argos:whether we agree with them or not. 95% of hunting is done on private property so we have to have permission to be on it or face a trespassing charge.

You do have it made up there. Although all I need is a license plate(sticker with numbers on it) Cost me $35 a year. Then I can ride.
