  • Argo rebuild

    Hello :
I'm new to the site and new owner of an '84 Argo. I am in the process of rebuilding it. I will need some advise on this project. Changing Kohler 17 hp to a new 23hp Vandguard, need clutch info. Power Block or Duster? front axels are shear pin should I change to Key way?
    Thanks for the help

      HI

Welcome aboard. You will find the people here are great! I have a 1984 argo as well. Needs alot of work but I found that with all three shears pins in place it is pretty reliable. Have not heard of installing key ways. But I did check out upgrading to splined axles. I was quoted $200 an axle. Have you completed your motor upgrade yet? Keep us posted as I looking to upgrade my 17 Koler as well.

Hey CJ, the power bloc is a great clutch, however the one for a 1 1/8 shaft uses a skinny belt like for the Argo Avengers, so it might not work very well with your stock secondary, as for the duster, i have no idea i have never used/seen one, hope that helps you out

Thanks for the info. on the Power Block clutch, Just made the purchase today on the Vanguard 23hp.
I will be breaking down the axels this weekend, $200 ea. for splined sounds to spendy for me. has anyone cut keyways in as opposed to shear pins? was thinking 1/4 x 1/4 - ??
          Thanks for help

            Argo Splined Axles

The quote for the splined axles @ $200.00 is out of wack. I recently purchased Argo splined axles for my Bigfoot part number 810-75 for $52.49 CDN. each. These are 1 1/4" axles, which are standard in most Argo's. If you are paying more than that PM me and I will direct you to an Argo dealer that will ship them directly to you.

              20o per axle.

              Hi again,

The $200 an axle I was quoted also include replacing the original sprokets (shear pins) with splined sprockets. If you do not replace the sprokets you will still need to use shear pins. But the 52 for the axle seems to be a good price.
