  • Old argo here need some help!!

    Hello Everyone,

My name is Mike and I have been lurking this site for sometime. Here's he story.

OK, so I just picked up an ailing Argo 6x6. I would like to find some info on it if possible. I don't even know the year. (Owner said it may be a 1987) It has a Kohler 440 2 cycle engine. And the plate on the dash reads. "k40003" What other info do I need and were would it be located? Are there owners/service manuals available online?

The unit needs a drive belt and after that point I can find out what else. The previous owner "Says" he has one on order. If not I will need to locate the proper one. He did start it while I was there, He may have had it all doctored up with starting fluid as when I got it home it would not start. I got it to turn over a few times but it would turn just a few then slip and grind. Rinse Repeat. Then it got to the point that all I could hear was the starter kicking out and not turning. Would this be indicative of a bad starter? Or perhaps a low battery? I thought about pulling the starter off but I had absolutely know Idea how to get to it!!! How is work generally done on these? Do you pull the body apart somehow? Contortion yourself awkwardly? Hire a troll to climb in?

The unit could definitely use rewired so a wiring diagram would be awesome!

This is just the beginning of what I am sure will be a long list of questions.

P.S. at $2500 for the unit, some tracks and 6 spare (used but decent shape) tires did I get reamed?

Thanks in advance! I look forward to being a part of this community!!!

sounds like too much starting fluid was used...does motor turn over by hand? if so, charge the battery slowly.might just need a charge up.?

ok, thats good , it turns over !! charge battery, that doesn't work, then it's probably the starter, or a bad connection.........
Any idea what motor is in it?

Well, as I said in the post above it's a kohler 440 2 cycle, Is there more info than that to get? I believe I saw a plate on the motor.

It's 11:00 PM I just stuck in on the charger on a 2 amp charge, I'll let it go all night. So anyone have any input on what is involved in removing the starter? Or the year of his unit? The more I look the wiring over I think it needs completely redone. I will need some wiring diagrams for that.

          Thanks in advance guys!!!

if you could post some pics there would be many peaple on here who could help, if its a 2cycle motor then the year is more likely 77 than 87!!
            great by 8

Not too bad of a buy cause it came with tracks but still a bit pricy for an oldy, it looks like a '77, just base model no skid plate no winch kit, if you want it to run smooth put a nice 4 stroke V-twin in it

I thinks it's older than 1987 but the body looks like it is in great shape.

Looking at your pictures, it looks like the serial number plate is right behind the steering levers. If you can get the numbers from there you should be able to find the date of manufacture from ODG.

The numbers on the plate are "k40003" So I just need to call Ontario Gear?

Also, How does one go about pulling the boday apart on one of these, I pulled the trimm loose in a spot and it looks like it's riveted. Just drill them out? Thanks!!!

I drilled mine out, when I split it and replaced them with 1/4'' bolts. The gasket on mine was shot, so I used a gasket eliminator that doesn't harden.

The seal and body on this on are in great shape! I should easily be able to take it off and put it back on. Though I'm not sure it would o back on with bolts, I think I read somewhere people use aluminum rivets. Hmm...
