i want to put a new winch on my argo.. i have a 8x8 conquest.. it has a 2500 on it now.. but i would like a 4000lb warn.... any advice at all?

Don't cheap out on your winch (Never heard of a VENOM, so I guess I'm assuming it's cheap
lol)
Anyway, Warn, as a general rule are good. But, most of their smaller winches do NOT lock in place when not under power. If left with a load on them, they will "creap". For example, if you winch the front of the Argo off the ground, to change a tire, the winch will slowly let the Argo back down.
Also, Warn likes to use plastic gears in their smaller winches. Impact loads on these winches can break the teeth off the gears.
I have a 4,200 lb RULE on my Argo, and I have found that it's not quite enough sometimes. Also, I have the short spool (50' line), I wish I had the long spool (100' line).
Several friends also have Rule winches, mostly 4,200's and 3,300's. None have failed yet, unlike our experiences with Warn
Whatever you choose, remember to bump check it before you ride. Finding out that it's not working once you are in the middle of the mudhole sucks

Like RD, said don't cheap out on the winch, it is probably the most important add-on that you can install. I have one of the new Warn 3000 RT on my 950 and the new braking system works great. But their engage/freespool knob will easily move past it's intended stopping point and jamb, leaving you locked in the freespool position. I fixed mine after several such episodes, by removing the cap/knob and filing in the necessary places. works fine now. Warn has a good name, however what the hell happenned to "made in America"?? i bought a Warn Powerplant for my Jeep, took it out of the box and had "China" ALL over it! i assume all their winches are made in China now there any winches left truley made in America? cause thats the one i will buy, took the Powerlant back

All Superwinch "EP" series are made in America, other than the T1500 and T2000. (So they claim)
All Ramsey Winches are manufactured in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. (So they say)
"Manufactured" can mean "assembled".
I understand (from 3rd-hand info) that many newer Warns have many Chinese parts inside of them - even though those parts are assembled in OR. From the same source I've heard that the high-end Warns have the highest US content. I don't know about Ramsey, but I wouldn't be suprised if the same were true.
In today's "world economy" it's hard to find any complex manufactured product that is 100% US sourced - especially if there are any electronics involved.

I have a 3000 lb mile marker and it workes good. When I have had the winch tied around a tree and its pulling me off the stump that I'm ballanced on I couldn't care less were it was made. Just a thought. It hasn't failed me yet.

The new "Rule-Of-Thumb" in "BUYING AMERICAN MADE" is simple. If you want something that is made in america, just go to China or Mexico, or Maylasia, or Honduras, or.......(the list goes on) to get it. Thank you OH-SO-MUCH NAFTA.It's all just nuts and bolts.Comment

IMHO: My L Cheapo Harbour Freight $49 special has paid for itself Over and Over and is still working great. I have submerged it several times too.

Check out gorilla winches,This is a good winch at a resonable price and they do good in water.I have a 2500 that has been in water and mud many times no problems.I don't believe you'll find a beter winch for the price.sigpicComment
