Update on the 18 Kohler refit. I took it for a ride today. To get it to fit I had to cut about 3inches out at the front of the hood area. This gave me clearence for the exhaust etc. I am in the process of fabing up a new hood out of fiberglass. I now have to figure out a way of holding my winch. I also have to find the right belt. I took the measurement center to center of the clutches from my buddies 8 wheeler with the same engine and set the distance on my machine to that. What I didn't realize that his takes a heavier belt due to different clutches and when I tried his belt, the machine would creep at an idle.I have a belt from a previous try with the 15 hp offshore engine that works but is a little bit narrow. I took some pics if any one is interested.

      Hey Spits,,
When I installed my 16 HP B&S into my 83, I learned that from early to mid 1984 and older, the belt is narrower than from late 1984 and newer. Like you, I used my original drive and driven clutches. I need a new belt as mine is worn down and still has some oil in it from when my Tech went south. But man does it go through the mud. This last April a group of us were over to AAA's bush and he and Bw6 were surprised at how well this little 6x6 performed with myself and 3 of my grandchildren in it. In fact I towed another machine back with mine loaded. When I get back home from this 2 month long business trip, I will take some photos of the installation. When I mentioned in this thread earlier that I cut new holes in the mounting plate to the right, I meant to the right side of the machine as you would be sitting in the vehicle. Thought I should clear that up in case someone else is going to do the same thing you and I have done. With the B&S engine I bought, the oil filter mount put the oil filter in line and in the way of the drive belt. I could have purchased the right oil filter mount $$$$ or a B&S remote oil filter mount more $$$$, so I built my own out of 3/8 in. aluminimum that I had in the garage from my race car chassis building days. It is mounted above the battery.
Hey, hope all this is help to anyone who is interested in changing out their old Tech for a new B&S engine.
      Cheers Al

I think i have the belt situation in hand, sort of.When I put the offshore engine in I had to move the engine wayyyy ahead to clear the valve cover. In doing this I had to purchase a long belt from Royal Distributing in Guelph. This is when I found out THAT belt was too wide. With the help of the table saw, a steady hand,a good guide fence I was able to narrow the belt down....just a tad too much.It drives the machine OK but but not to full capacity, just like a badly worn belt would. In fact it is just the right length,if it were a bit wider. I'll use that belt for a spare and get another belt but trim about half as much off. Most will think I'm nuts but I can't seem to find the belt I need. I should have got the belt FIRST then installed the engine. Live and learn.

I actually had the Argo out for a spin around the yard. My wife wanted to go for a little ride.I forgot to tell her to hang on when I did a 180.Not impressed. I had to pull the engine and redrill the mount holes to tighten the belt and align it right. After I got the throttle working right I can see where this could be fun. The hood came out not tooooo bad-not as good as I hoped but better than I expected.I'll send some pics tomorrow if I can figure out how. I think I'll have the time. The place where I worked for 36 years went to Shippensburg Penn. and today was my last day. Too poor to retire, too old to get a job. I'll just have go fishin',hunting' ,you know, manly stuff.
