Charging System 83 Argo 8x8

The battery on my Argo seems to go dead frequently. Can someone tell me how the charging system works on an 83 Argo with a 17HP Kohler series II?

I had the same problem with my 1985 Argo 8x8 with a 18hp kohler magnum. A bad rectifier was the problem.

One of my Argo's had a problem with dying batteries when I bought it. Turned out that the PO had some work done to it, and the mech that worked on it wired the guage lights directly to the battery. No way to tell they were on unless it was dark. Took a little foolin around to figure that one out. But it was part of the reason I got such a good deal on it.

How do I test if the rectifier is bad?

It sounds like your regulator is not working. I had the same prob, priced out a new one from Argo and it's pricey. I got one from ServiceProParts.com for about $100 US and now I'm back with lights.

I got my rectifier from Kohler. I can't remember but I think it was around $75. If you want the part number, let me know.

How many volts should the charging system put out?

My battery shows about 12.2v on its own. With the argo running and revving the engine it jumps to between 12.5to about 12.9.

Would this be normal for this engine?
