  • New style axles on older Argo's?

Have any of you guys tried putting the newer style axles, with the smaller inner brngs, into an older Argo with the straight shaft axles?
I have about a half dozen of the newer style axles kicking around the shop at home, and an older 6x6 with the older straight axle shafts. I figure that I should just be able to swap the older axles with the newer style. I won't be able to change out the 2 front axles, as they are longer, and have the sprocket keyed to the shaft, but I should be able to change out the back 4.

I've changed the rear axle on my 78 to the new style & had to machine the end of the shaft a 1 1/2 inches shorter to accomodate the rear tub. But everything lined up perfect after the machining hope this helps.

I just finished taking out axles on my newly aquired 87 it had the new axles. It seem to be ok. some bearing were the right way and some were wrong but everything seem to fit. Can wait to see your front and rear bumper design. Tim

        Tks Tim,
Are all your axles the same length? My 6x6 has the longer axles on the front that extend in right under the engine mount. I never have checked to see what the yr is on that machine.
As for the bumper and rack, not sure when I will get around to that. It's more of a winter project (I should have done it this winter, but never really got around to it). I will post up when I do get around to it. believe it, or not, I'm already pretty much booked up untill about the middle of October.........Summer can be so hectic

          axles

RD My axles all vary in length because of previous owner butchering, as you will see from pictures. I think I have one original length axle. My axles do not extend under motor. Look at the one with gussets. And you though you have design problems LOL Tim Notice thickness of homemadw hubs !!!!!!!100_0675.jpg
