  • Idler shaft spocket set screw-use or not?

    Hey all,

Do you guys use the allen keyed set screw the would hold the idler arm sprocket from floating? On my 05 avenger the set screws are missing. I didn't think anything of it until I changed the idler chains the other day and the master link popped out while riding tonite. Most likely I did not have the master link clip in properly but I thought I'd ask about the set screw as I could see that having a bearing on things if it is supposed to be there......

Don't know about the avenger and frontier, but the earlier argos didn't use set screws on the idler or front axle sprockets.. according to my argo distributor at the time. Seems like I put set screws in the front axle sprockets one time, and it held the chain out of line, due to the way the idler shaft is positioned. Your avenger may be different. I use anti seize compound to keep them lubed so they can move where they want.

I had to go look at my 07 Avenger, Sprocket can slide back and forth along the spline except that I keep the idler chains tight, about 1/8" play. I see a snap ring about 3/4" away but not sure what it does? Hope this helps. The weather this Canadian holiday weekend is supposed to be good in southern ontario and we are giong to ride and camp out and tell lies. I can't wait

In my Conquest, I don't use setscrews on the idler shaft sprocket or the bearings. The sprocket is free to move on the shaft, and the shaft is free to move as far as the chains allow it to (which is not very much).

2006 Avenger is the same. Floating allows the sprocket to move when the frame flexes.
