11 tooth vs. 13 tooth Idler Shaft ?

  • 11 tooth vs. 13 tooth Idler Shaft ?

    My 87 Argo Idler Shaft came with 13 tooth sprockets on the small end and 24 tooth sprockets on the drive end, old style all sprockets welded to shaft. Can I use the new style Idler Shaft with 11 tooth sprockets on small end and splinded 24 tooth sprockets on drive end ? New style Idler Shaft is 1 in. longer than old shaft[ATTACH][/ATTACH]. What will 11 tooth vs. 13 tooth due to performance ? See pictures. Thanks Tim

      Well Argo said they made the Magnum by listening to what people wanted which was more land speed, so i think they kept the same gearing in the tranny and just added a bigger drive sprocket=13 teeth as opposed to 11 teeth, what machine did you get the new shafts from cause they will work but the machine will be a tad slower, perhaps they came from a '95+ which has the diffrent gearing tranny

          I think you would probably like the increased power to the wheels.
          I don't remember for sure, but I think it works out to about 2.5km/hr drop in top speed.

          I think you should try it, and let us know how it works for ya

            Should probably find out for sure if this idea works before spending $.. I'm wondering what the chain slack/tension will be..

              Roger S. putting on new chains tension won't be a problem. can adjust with tensioner bolt. Rock Doc. more power would be great over speed. I'm wondering about the idler being 1/4 in longer on 11 tooth end and 3/4 in. longer on the 24 tooth end. With the bearing set up toward the middle can I leave the axle extended ? It was not extended on my old Idler. see photo of new idler . Thanks Tim100_0708.jpg

                The outer bearing's set screw is what locates the shaft horizontally.. the inner bearing's set screw just rides in a spline groove. You can set the shaft alignment to match your rear axle sprockets and use the outer bearing to lock it. See if the added length of shaft will hit or clear the body tub.

                  Roger S. Call my dealer and he has used them before to upgrade older argo's. I think I'm ok on the body side as everything lines up. The inner (towards middle) i will leave sticking out as there is lots of room. Thanks Tim

                    Sounds like you have the length issue settled, but if it was me and I had to, I would just cut off the extra length.

                    For the set screws, personally I don't use them. I just let the chains keep the shaft located. Never had a problem with doing it that way yet, but I'm sure there are reasons to lock the shaft in place.
