  • Mid 80's wheels turning when on blocks?

Increadibly stupid question of the day:

I have a mid 80's Argo 8x8, IC model. When I put that puppy up on blocks with all tires off the ground, put it in gear, and give it throttle, what exactly are the wheels on both sides supposed to do? My gut says both sides should spin at once....and YES....all my shear pins are installed and kosher.

Mine seems to be acting almost in a limited-slip kind of way, where one side isn't driving until I hit the brake on that side and release it.

Can anyone with a knowledge of the tranny shed some light on this?

    Thanks....

An Argo Trans is really nothing more than an "Open Differential". All it takes is a slight difference (drag) to one side, and only the other side will turn. Especially at low RPM's.
I believe that when I put mine up on blocks, it's the right side that will spin easiest. Apply slight brakes to that side and the left spins.

Same thing happens when driving through mud/muskeg, ect, if there is an extreme difference in traction from one side to the other. The side with the most traction, gets the least power. It's VERY easy to control this with the slight aplication of brakes, and some practice.
