Tranny Rebuild

Hey guys, Haven't posted for a while, but have been viewing. I have the slowest project ever i'm sure!! I need some advice on tearing into a argo tranny without a catastrophy. I want to do it myself but am nervous I botch it. I was told by my argo guy that it needs some spacers(slipping out of low gear and reverse when i give it to much gas).I have the diagram and there appears to be ALOT OF SMALL PARTS TO FALL OUT WHEN OPENING.Took my jack shaft to get rebuilt for new bearing as well. New bearings all around. thanks for now,

Don't be afraid, there really is nothin in there that you could mess up, actually i was really surprised how simple they are when i opened mine up. Open it up and have alook at the gears for wear

When we pulled my tranny apart,,,the cover came off mean,,,,all the bolts were out,,,but there is a shaft about 1/2" in Diameter, that sticks through the cover,,,it was a bear to get it off the small shaft,,,,finally whorked it off,,,gears all looked good,,,then we found the bad Idler shaft in the diff..replaced all bearing in it too,,,like 10 bearings in there I recall.

Thanks guys, argo dealer says he can fix for around $200 for 2 hrs. work plus parts. do you think this is reasonable?

$200.00 Plus parts????? Ouch. I must be out of touch with reality. If $100.00 bucks an hour is the rate for an Argo dealer I'm going to set up my business a little faster. Seems a tad steep to me but I do all my own work. It may be cheap in the end if you happen to mess it up though. I guess it would depend on experience and how brave you may be.

I should have added in my last post , like eightwheeler said they are a very simple gearbox. If you do run into trouble ask some questions or if it comes down to it, horrors on horrors, you could take it to the dealer. But that is a nasty thought.

$70.00 in labour is pretty cheap. You would have to pay for the parts anyway. I would do the work myself but then I've also worked on that kind of stuff for 30 odd years off and on. working with aluminum can be tricky sometimes. If you do the work, just take your time and watch as things come apart. If the case won't split because the bearings are tight in the case , use a heat gun(paint stripper) to heat the case around the bearing. the aluminum heats faster than the bearing, expanding enough to let the bearing come out. I had mine apart to check it out and replace the bearings and seals. I have one speed ahead and one reverse so I am not familiar with the two speed.

Thanks again spits. I've thought about this long enough now.I can do a job on the side working with wood and know what I'm doing, rather than working with something i'm not familiar with and possibly breaking it. The labour would be the same and all i would be paying for would be parts.Hope that made sense.

Take lots of photoes as you dismantle it. With a memory like mine this works wonders. Most of the time the shots are better than the manual.

hey mike , i take my machine to luch when have problems or need parts.He definitely knows his stuff and is honest. Good luck on your repairs and send me a message when your ready to get out for a ride.
