  • Throttle cable broken

OK, so as I have posted in a different thread I have a late 70's argo I have been working on for sometime. It need a fair amount of work and I am getting there slowly. I currently have all the shear pins out and an driving it trying to get the sprocket tubes loose.

Well, the other day I was on my way back from the pond and stopped halfway across the lawn and when I went to go again the throttle was unresponsive. Upon investigation I can see the throttle cable has broke. It broke in the grip near the little barrel shaped ferrule.

I have looked around online trying to find a throttle cable that would have the proper ends I need. It's a mikuni slide carb, VM somthing I presume. But of course there are no markings. I was able to rig the machine up full throttle and get home. (intersting ride). I saw someone mentioned using the type of cable bicycles use for brakes. I can see how this might work. Anyone else tried this recenlty? Or know of a source for the cable I need? It's a hand grip twist type throttle and I am not against replacing the grips as they are pretty rough themselves.

    Thanks,

The last cables I bought was from a gokart ebay seller parts guy and bought 3 that where 80" long I think. It was just the cable though, not the sheath. You could pull yours out and measure it and go ebaying.

Mi cable broke at the hand grip also so i melted the end of the cable and cut the cable shorter then resoldered the end on. There was just enough adjustment for one repair this way. Just faster than finding a new one.

If you can't get what you want at Wallmart or a bike shop, as afore mentioned, try a motorcyle shop, a small one that repairs all types of bikes. When I changed engines in my argo I had to get a longer cable. The guy had it in a bulk roll along with the end I needed. I used my trusty heat gun to solder the end on. $3.00 and had enough for two cables.

Hi just got my argo up and running after a 2 year full rebuild. I replaced the hand throttle with a thumb throttle from a chinese 10cc quad. It works well. I then got a bicyce brake cabe fro a kmart department store in australia. It was perfect length. I cut the carby end off and drilled a hole through a bolt and put it in the hole and locked it with a nut.
