steering idea ?

G/day, i am having problems steering the argo 8x8 . Its an early tb model. What are peoples thoughts on putting another set of discs on each side, maybe on the 3rd axles with 2 master cylinders up front to steer. Any sugestions welcome. The original discs are shot. Thanks Ken.

If the discs are shot, try just replacing them first. Adding more discs might not be tha answer for exhisting discs that don't work. Could save yourself some money and headache.

That probably would work but probably isnt 100%. Like Jeff t-boss said, Replacing the originals will for sure work so that may be the route to go.

Thanks for the input. My problem is without importing from the USA i can not get the disks or the calipers over here. Had the discs skimmed and now they are out of round and too thin. The idea was to trim the old discs off leaving just the sprocket.A set of discs maybe from atv or somthing hydraulic. Lack of room behind the firewall got me thinking about putting them further back. The original mechanical system has been a pain since i have had it. I think you could mount 2 master cyls with a lever action via the 2 original sticks easy enough .Just abit worried as to the strength of the axle. Thanks again Ken.

Hydraulic Brakes

Sweetpee, I understand where your coming from, those older Argo's with mechanical brakes are not the best. I like your idea, but not the location. Mounting on any axle is not a good idea, first the diameter of the disks (rotors, if they clear the bottom) will be subject to water, grease and other debris getting on them. I would install a dreaded jack-shaft with a sprocket/chain loop off of any axle (space permitting) and mount your disks up about 12" from the top of your frame.

If you use this product (mechanically actuated/hydraulic calipers see link) you don't need to use master cylinders. Just adopt your existing steering arms to activate the calipers.

BTW; This is good product for any older Argo's with mechanical brakes who would like to upgrade to hydraulic.

The brake diameter would be very small if you used the axles. You would need to install multiple sets to get the same braking force. I suggest you cut down the existing disc hubs and bolt on some cast iron or steel rings. Find some small motor cycle hydraulic calipers and fab some new brackets. install the master cylinders as you originally planned.

Bw6. Thanks for that link. I just might use one of those to upgrade my Terra Tiger older mechanical brake setup. It looks like it will bolt right up without much fuss.

Bw6, thanks for that link. Will work out what i need and contact them. Great find appreciated. Using jack shafts is no problem as the rear of the machine has a false floor on hinges level with the top of the tub so plenty of space. Thanks Amphiman1 for that number.
