  • Need some help please

Hey everyone i'm new to these forums and i need a little help. I recently purchased an argo 6x6 and i would like a little help identifying it. I was told it's an 83? is it?. what model is it?
It was originally red and was rubber coated black.

Another question i have is an overheating problem. It runs great....for a while and then once it gets hot it stalls out and won't start until it cools. It's an air cooled tecumseh (unsure of the HP) the air intake duct has some holes in it but nothing too big...idk, what else could cause this overheating / stalling out problem?
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome, the Argo you have is from the mid 70's cause it has left side gas filler and 3 bolt rims, models back then were just basic economy models which is what you have cause it has no skid plate, and as to help out your overheating is it a 2 or 4 stroke Tejunksie?

Hmm....usually those old things dont mind the heat, you sure its overheating? oh and how well does the rubber coating stick to the plastic?

Congrats on the argo,The piece of plywood over the cover could be restricting the air flow.Just a suggestion,The tires are on backwards,That would cause it not to swim.Try running it without the plywood.keep us posted,Good luck.

thanks for the advice everyone. I'll try running it without the plywood over the engine compartment and see if that helps keep it cool. There is a good 2 or 3 inch gap either side of the plywood where air could flow through, but I'm going to be ordering a new hood in the next week or so anyways.
And no, i'm not 100% sure that overheating is the problem. It just seems that it runs fine when it's cold and after it runs a while i can start to feel the heat really coming off the thing, and thats when it stalls out and won't start back up until it cools off for ten or so minutes.
If i'm just cruising around it seems to run fine, but when i horse on it a little up hills or doing alot of turning it heats up pretty bad.
I'm also thinking part of the problem is that the gas is just gravity fed for now. I bought a fuel pump from richards relics, and have yet to put it in, honestly i'm not sure how to install it. Maybe someone can give me some pointers there too. I'll post a picture of the pump in a day or two so you know what i'm looking at.
As far as the rubber coating, it seems to be holding up pretty good. I've driven it through some pretty heavy brush and it didn't take any off. If i need to touch it up on a regular basis so be it.
And yea now i feel dumb about the tires being on backwards. now that i look at it it's clear as day they're on wrong. I'll be correcting that this weekend.

Im not a pro at argos but seems they may have had issues with the rotors getting hot and new machines have a blower on them. Maybe horsing around is getting the rotors hot which is in turn hot air in engine compartment making the engine warmer. Not sure if older machines had the blower or not, if so maybe make sure its working? But if the stock hood allowed it to breath more it may have been just enough.

Looks like a pretty nice machine though. Hope you get the bugs out of it soon.

                    Maybe 1977 KB?

Your 6x6 looks a lot like my '77 KB. Closer than any other Argo I have seen. You can call Ontario Drive & Gear to find out the exact model and year. I gave them the serial number on my transmission and they identified mine.

Mine obviously had issue with heat, too. It came with a 2-stroke Kohler engine that has a built in ducting system. The PO had a temp gauge on the brakes, which were completely baked, and drilled holes in the hood for ventilation.

                    I like the black!

                      Coating

Dip-it has a spray can coating that will stick to abs. I see no reason why it will not stick to HDPE. You can order it or get it at Lowes. Colors are: Black, blue, yellow and Red. These are the ones i have been trying. Hope this helps. Plastic must be very clean. The ABS was sanded to enhance adhesion. Orange can be bought but must be applied with a spray gun. Doesn't come in a aerosol can.

Krylon has a plastic spray also, but i haven't tried it yet. I like the dip-it

Plasti dip is what i used. It seems to be sticking quite well, but there are spots i'm starting to have come up, and it doesn't seem to like being left in the sun. I knew this was going to be a problem when i did it, but im not all that worried about touching it up every now and then. The plasti dip seems to stick to the plastic better than metal. It peeled up anywhere i sprayed over metal, but sticks good to the body, i was driving it through all kinds of brush this weekend and had none of it come off.
I think i've got the heating problem solved. I still have the plywood cover over the engine compartment until i can get a new hood in, but i spaced it up so theres more room for air to get in and put a new air intake duct in. It didn't get hot and stall out on me once, but now i have a new problem i need a little advice on.
I popped one of the small chains off and can't figure out how to get it back on. It's one of the 2 short chains between the transmission and the axle. If anyone has any tricks to getting it back on i would appreciate it. It's extremely tight and i can't even get close to getting it back over the sprocket and it seems like i may need to do some major disassembly to get it back on, unless someone has done this before and knows of a good way to put it back on.
Also what can i do once i get it back on to prevent it from coming off again? the sprockets look to be in mint condition as well as the chain. It was not loose at all. it was on very tight.
