  • Holy %$#@ It fired up !

Got bored of working on my argo frame and had to move some junk around garage, stumbled across my 18 kohler it had to be moved so I threw it on my bench. Went to work removing heat shroud found two mouse nest. Cleaned fuel pump and carb. Set magneto clearance because it was too close. Drilled and tapped broken bolts that hold heat shroud around motor. Reassembled everything. Hooked up temporary gas tank and hose. Poured gas in carb touched battery to starter and see fired up and it didn't run too bad ! I don't know how long this motor has been idle but its been a while from it condition. It still needs a proper carb. cleaning. Then I will test compression and go from there. Still amazed it fired up!100_0766.jpg

Kohler motors are just amazing!!! I have one in a old cub cadet tractor and its the sort of tractor that just sits outside forever. It sat out there there when I got it and the past 3 yrs Ive had it. It can be the dead of winter. 1' of snow on the hood. With good battery. Sitting for months and months. Choke, throttle near idle, turn key, and a POW shes a running.

So is that the motor your using in the argo?

That should be a workhorse of an engine. The oppose twins seem to have lots of torque. Good luck with the build. Looking forward to it.

that's the same engine that's in my old argo. it had been sitting 4 years when i got it. drained the tank, blew out the lines and poured in fresh fuel. fired right up. it probably would have been fine how it was, but i rebuilt the carb just for good measure.

For safety's sake, always replace the fuel pump on any KT17/M18 that has been sitting for a while. It's a $50 insurance policy, because those diaphragms just don't like to be sitting still for a long time. Check out eBay auctions, and only buy the genuine Kohler part. It may cost $10 more than an after-market, but it's worth it.

It's a known fact that engines only fail when you're 50 miles from nowhere.
