lol, ya that's Shadow the "Famous Wolf Defender". The little bugger has been in the newspaper more often than I have. The last time was this Spring, he came in second in the Dog Pull Competition. Lucky to get that after lying around the house all winter. He came in first the yr before.
Short Story Time
It was about 5 days into our VA, and the kids were in bed. Diane and I were in the other cabin, thinking about the finishing work to be done. Shadow was just outside the door.
Shadow lets out a couple really raspy barks, then we hear a steady, VERY deep growl. Diane and I step outside to see what the fuss is about (Shadow, as a rule does NOT bark). He (Shadow) is looking at the ATV bridge, about 20yrd away. (My property borders a creek on one side and the lake across the front). There was a VERY LARGE white and black wolf standing there on MY bridge, staring back at us. No kidding, that thing made Shadow look like a Tea Poodle. It was at least a foot and a half taller than the dog, and was showing NO fear at all, he just stood there and looked at us. It was just getting a little dark out, and the flashlight I was shining at him made his eyes glow a really cool flouresent green color. We watched him for a couple minutes, before I remembered that I had a gun in the other cabin. I told Diane to keep the light on him, and I would be right back.............................For some reason Diane didn't like that idea, as it turned out, the wolf decided to leave moments later anyway.
I gotta tell ya, I've seen alot of wolves, and some big ones in my time, but that one was beyond big, he was fricken massive. I would have to guess that he was in the 160-180lb range
Throughout the whole encounter, Shadow stood right between Diane and I. Not a move or sound out of him, other than a low deep rumble coming from his throat.
I think I'm starting to like this mutt, he seems to have a full set of wits about him, and really uses them.
So, anyway, the next night I'm upstairs in the new cabin, wife is putting the kids to bed in the other cabin and I hear the neighbor holler out "BEAR coming your way. He had to be calling out to me, as we were the only people out there. So I bolt downstairs, out the door, to make sure Diane and the kids are inside. Just as I start out the door, this MASSIVE dark brown "Black Bear" comes around the corner of the cabin I am just exiting. I grab the doorframe to slow my momentum, just as he catches sight of me (He is about 8ft away at this point). The Bear stops, and is looking at me. I am ssslllooowwwllly moving back into the doorway, preparing to slam the door on him, if required...........any guesses as to who shows up at this point?
Shadow breaks around the corner, in the trail. Fire eyed, hackles up, pearly whites on display.. .........again with that low rumble coming from his throat. lol, that bear took one glance over his shoulder, and imidiatly came to the conclusion that anyplace other than where he was would be a good place to be. He bolted across the creek, and I mean he BOLTED, he was out of site in about 2.2 nanoseconds. The speed he moved was really incredible, and I have my doubts that I could have closed the door fast enough, if he had made a break for me.
That is the extent of our "Wildlife Encounters" for the trip (other than the typical Squirrels, Grouse, Bunny Rabits, ect), but that was enough anyway. The next 4 weeks went by without a hitch.
Have a good night guys

I love seeing the utility of these machines tested in the way you do up North. Great technical driving. So which turns more up there; the tires or the winch?

LOL, Some days it's a "Toss Up" Sometimes the winch gets a real workout. I always carry a Booster pack with me just in case I end up killing my battery
