I was just out trying to adjust my brake plungers, and managed to snap one of the adjustable plunger pins. I was grumbling and swearing a bit, staring at the pieces when I thought "There has to be a way to fix this (temporarily) untill I can get to town
"
It broke right beside the "jam nut", so I had some threads on the plunger end and on the brake handle end. I ended up welding 2 nuts togeather to make one nut long enough to thread both halves of the plunger pin assembly in. Put it all togeather again, and it works , I even managed to get a little extra length out of it, but that extra length made my brakes more uneven than before, which is what I was trying to fix in the first place
OK, that was the left brake. I was trying to match it up to the right brake. Now I can't adjust it to the right brake, so I might as well adjust the right brake and match it up to the left........Makes sence, right
.
So, I pull the right side plunger pin assembly out, try to adjust it, and it breaks
, but this time it broke above the threads at the plunger end (much MUCH more grumbling and swearing at this point). Should have left well enough alone.
Tried kicking the Argo................didn't help, and didn't seem to bother the Argo at all.
Started looking around for something that might work. Managed to get the threaded rod part out of the plunger. Was looking at the broken piece, and figured I could modify a 1/4" bolt to make it work. So, a 1/4" bolt that is 1 1/2" long, with the head ground off to a nice rounded "dome" will work as the "adjustable" part of the Plunger Pin Assembly. I have everything back togeather, and working fine for the moment.
There you have it, a couple of different ways to (Temporarily) fix an "Adjustable Plunger Pin Ass" for the brakes on a Conquest.
Should have taken som pics, but I can do that when I get new parts to replace the pieces I "fixed".
