  • 1978 Argo trans bad?

Hi i recently bought a 1978 argo it is powerd by a 16hp techumseh motor and is a 6x6. Me and my brother went mudding today me in the argo and he was on a atv. He got stuck in the mud and i went to pull him out. As i was trying to pull him out i noticed that nothing was happening the argo was in gear but the tires did not move i thought they would at least spin out but it did not. Is it a transmission problem or ?

Did you have it in low gear,It could be a belt problem.

Hi thanks for the reply!! Ya it was in low gear and i tryed it in high gear aswell. The belt seems to be tight and engages fine when the belt kicks in. I will check and see when im towing again and see if the belts slipping. Thanks for your help.

If the driven clutch is turning ,the brake rotors, sprockets should as well(in gear)there are 2 keyways where the driven slides on input shaft.this would be the first place to look.my 78 had a sloppy shifter and didnt fully engage the gear which wound up taking the teeth off the input shaft.I made a post about it,heres the carnage

are you sure none of the tires were turning? if it lost traction on one side but not the other, it would stop the side that had traction because of the diferential in the argo trans. it sounds from the post that your still driving the machine so i doubt you've destroyed the trans
