  • Changing chain

So today while at the dealer picking up a tension spring I asked about chain for my 88 magnum (double 50) and to my surprise they sell it for each section that you need all ready to go links and all so I'm thinking tomorrow I'm gonna grab the chains for the trans to the frame each something like $35. Now will I need any special tools to pull it together or to help in linking it? So far I've only dealt with replacing a clip and one side plate that was missing on a rear chain but was easy as the chain was still linked.. any tips?

These are not bad to replace. These can be removed and installed with no special tools. Lifting the machine off the ground on the side you are working on. For the future on the other chains pick up a pair of needle nose vise grips or a chain stretcher. Grove the ends of the needle nose to fit the link in the chain and it will pull it together. Some guys use tie wraps. This works but i like the chain stretcher or the needle nose. Don't throw away the old chain, put it in a bag with some oil and use it in case of an emergency. You can never tell what will happen! Just my two cents.

PS: add a chain break to your tool list. Get a good one.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"
