  • Kohler KT 17 engine replacement

I am going to replace the engine in my 1984 Argo 8x8, the engine that came with it was the Kohler KT-17 and is ticking bad at idle. Has anyone re-powered there older argo with a more modern engineI would like to go bigger 18-23hp but want to use something that will use the same clutch and bolt into the old location without much hassle.

i pulled a 18 horse kohler out and put in a 20hp v-twin into my dads argo, it is tight but works really good, and dad has lots of power now2001_0101_000105AA.jpg

Kawasaki makes a 29hp Fuel Injected model that should drop in. Only problem might be that it's a little taller than a stock engine.

I would like to try this one some day

Aw man, that looks soooooo professional of an engine swap. I used a M18 Kohler twin---- opposed cylinder, and had the worst of times(but still a lot of fun....to me anyway) to get things right. Nobody will give me instructions on how to post pictures on this site, unless I'm really dumb or am missing the instructions, to show how my swap turned out. Anyway, did that engine come from princess and if so what was the list on the engine? I may have royally messed up on the engine choice. Looks like a real nice job.

Spits, at top of main page, choose Gallery.

Choose 'upload photo' on upper right.

Click on a 'Browse' button to locate a picture file on your computer.

          Upload.

You can also find instructions in the gallery at the top where it says image gallery help. It links to this page with instructions: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/gener...-pictures.html

Thanks for the pictures of the 20HP v-twin engine swap, this was the exact engine change I was looking at doing. Now that I know the engine fits I will go this route rather than rebuild the old KT 17 engine.

Did you need to change the motor mounts or do anything special other than the custom exhaust work?

                  Thanks again, Jim

had to make a remote oil filter mount, not to hard, just make a plate for both parts with hyd hoses inbetween. motor bolts right up to the mount plate, just need to slot them so that the belt is in line. i also raised the hood about 1.5 inches to clear the top of the motor. next time i get dads argo back here i will take some better pics of the oil filter set up

ps. aalot easier to take the top of the argo off before you start. makes life so much easier

Sounds good, any additional pictures or tips would be appreciated, you did an excellent job of the engine swap. Has the engine been reliable and does it make decent power? I also noticed that the clutch looks newer or upgraded can you confirm that as well. I am trying to sort out all the details so that the change over goes smooth.

the clutches are the ones from the old set up. dad has no problem going the same places as my conquest, which 20 hp liquid cooled v twin, he even dragged a moose out of a swamp with his machine this year, all we did was loop the rope around the antlers and tie to the ball on his argo, and away he went. if you go into the gallery and look up any pics posted by me, you should see more of the swap. i might try to put in a transmission with hyd brakes for him this winter. i know he will like that upgrade.
