I have a 98,The only adjustment is on the trans chain.Your axle chains have floating chain adjusters with a spring on one side. You could have a spring off or stretched chains. As your chain stretches over time the floating adjusters pull the bottom chain closer to the top chain,Then the spring loses tention and starts popping off the adjuster. The trans adjusters are behind the fire wall at the bottom of the trans. There is a big bolt that holds the trans bracket,You loosen that bolt,Then you should have a small adjuster on each side of the trans.Hope this helps.

      coosaridgerider,

How well did the floating chain adjusters work when the springs were new, and how long before the chains needed any adjustment?

If the tensioners are in good shape, check the nylon blocks too and your getting chain slap your probably due for chains. Check for signs of the chain rubbing on the frame cross members or anything else. Proper adjustment of the fore mentioned trans chains is important also. Also don't forget the chains to the front axles, these sometimes get missed on maintenance and have no tensioners. One bad chain can cause chain slap to be worse than it has to be.

The floating adjusters work great,I just put the first new set of chains on and i used the same springs. My adjusters are twisting from having the one spring on the one side.It should have a spring on each side.

Have you tried swapping the tensioner forks top for bottom.. that puts the twist to good use.
