  • looking at a 1980 8x8 argo

    hey guys,

Can any one tell me what is the biggest motor the transmission can handle? Apparently it has a yamaha 400 retrofit, but I havent seen it yet, the add reads "needs work, 1000 buck OBO". Maybe I can deal him down once I see it.I'm not expecting much from the description. Any feedback is very welcome

    Darcy.

    Parts

It's harder to find parts for the older Argo's. I know of only a few place that may carry parts for these older machines. Check the clutches for ridges and the frame for rusted out and weakened spots. If you can jack it up and check for bearing play. This will at least give him the impression you have some idea of what you are looking for and he may lower the price. For me the older machines are harder to find parts for, if you wait one of the newer models will pop up. Just my 2 cents worth. Others may have different opinions. Good luck.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

It depends on how much work you want to do on a machine. If you are like myself' you pick the older projects for a challenge. I have a fairly well equipped shop, bandsaw, lathe, mig welder, drill press and access to a milling machine when I need one..Some parts you can make, axles, engine mounts etc.Bearings seals chain etc need to be purchased. If you are looking for an economical machine, save your pennies for one already to go. Take some with you who has a good idea in what to look for, a handful of cash and start low on an offer. In the long run you will spend maybe LESS money and you are good to go......until something breaks. As far as the tranny question maybe R.D. can give you a better answer. This is my first Argo so my knowledge is quite limited.

I would really REALLY like to try a 29hp EFI Kawasaki. I THINK (read, I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE) the drivetrain would handle it without any problems.

        Something like this:
29 hp Kawasaki OHV Twin - liquid cooled, fuel injection FD791D S00 : Farmers Exchange
