  • New Owner of Older 6x6 with K399 Kohler. Couple Questions Please :)

Hey Everyone.. So I just got hooked on the Argo! Love the look and can't wait for the ride!

I just got myself a 6x6 Argo for $500.00. Yes it does need work.. A fair bit of work but my father in law and I have somehting to do now together

I would like to know your thoughts on the K3992ST Kohler Engine. twin cylinder 2 stroke single carb. This one was not looked after so we are replacing the rings and all the gaskets and seals. This a nice little engine to use?

Also I was wondering what the size of the chains are for the drive system on it and also if there is supposed to be chain tensoners on these machines? I couldn't see a place for them to be there.. I would put this machine around mid 197's. Is this right?

Thanks for all your advice and I know I will be asking lot's and hanging around and posting pics.

    Bro,

Great buy on the argo. Welcome to your new addiction. Should be good times ahead for you and your father in law. FYI, yank that 2 stroke, and set it aside. Trust me, you'll want to find a modern 4 cycle. You shouldn't have trouble selling the 2smoke. There are plenty of small engine speed junkies that would love to get their hands on that old twin.

My dad worked for the Railroad for 30 years, and would bring home 2 or 3blown kohler twins every summer. The railroad would throw the blown engines away like they were trash. (they used to use them for rail cutters) As you can imagine, we eventually had some killer dune buggies, and go-carts.

          nice to meet you!

I just got a 2 smoker argo 6x6 like yours. Mine has a Chapparal engine in it. You should call richards relics. I talked to him and he has a manual for the old kohler 2 strokes.

Yes, it should have chain adjusters. I have to build one for my argo as it is missing one. Would you like me to get you a picture of one?

Also, near as i can tell it only has 4 adjusters. There are one each for the rear 4 axles. It dosent use it from the x-mission to the jack shaft or from the jack shaft to the front axle.

                      K3992ST

I see this is an old conversation but thought I would take a chance and see if I get a reply. I have a 1972 argo that also has a kohler K3992ST engine. All of the parts and manuals that I find on the internet seem to be for K399-2 or K399-2T. I was wondering if you ran into this problem and if you know if gasket sets and stuff like that for either of these other model numbers are compatible with K3992ST also if you or anyone else has found a manual for this exact model engine, or can tell me more about it. Appreciate any help.
