  • Argo Rubber Tracks on a 6x6 Frontier

    Hey Guys,

Last August I took the plunge and bought a brand new 2009 Argo Frontier 6x6. I have since added the windshield and top and now I just added Rubber Tracks. Yeah I got a fortune into it but I love it. I sold my Bigfoot to get this machine. Heres my question for those of you who have installed your own rubber tracks. I followed the directions perfectly and I think there is still too much slack. I need to know how much slack there should be. The directions say that they should hang 2 to 3 inches under the middle wheel when elevated. I only made the one cut but I could take a maximum of one additional inch off the uncut end. Obviously they come made for an 8x8 so you only make a cut at the one end. Has anyone ever installed a pair and made the second cut off the opposite end?

Thanks for all your input and happy Argoing !!!

    Mr Riveter

I found when I followed the directions from Argo on where to cut the track it was too slack, I removed the hinge and cut the track so the hinge butt up against a grouser on both sides. This and running 6psi in my Frontier tires made it perfect for the amount of slack and had no issues all last winter.

It took me a while to get up the courage to make that final cut, a lot of $$$$ at stake.

Have fun I hope this helps.
Ya ain't stuck til the winch cable comes out!!!

        tracks

I install these rubber tracks all the time thats the same trick i came up with as long as they are close to 3" you are fine if they are too tight it will wear bearings ,tracks ,tires and its very hard on the machine overall.

Hey Junkman, thanks for the reply but does that mean you always have to cut some off from both ends? Keep in mind, I only cut some off the one end like the directions call for. You would think they are always made the same so I just want to know if you've cut from both ends. thanks

To answer your question, I had to cut from both ends and the slack is 3 inches. The hinge butts up against two raised parts of the tracks.

Thanks YelloArgo! I understand totally. Anyone who has ever installed the rubber argo tracks on a 6x6 totally understands what your saying. Now, another question, how are they holding up... I mean do you find they are lasting? Is there any problems taking them off for a week or two and driving with the bearing extensions on?

              thanks again.

I plowed 5 driveways, had a lot of fun times and put close to 30 hours with the tracks on and had no issues with bearings. The extensions work very well. When I took off the tracks I ran for 2-3 weeks with the extensions on waiting to see if there was going to be any more snow, I just took extra care on the trails through the woods not to pinball around too much.

The only advice I can give is be carefull on the step snow banks with the tracks on. The Frontier climbs like a billy goat and it felt like I was going to pull a Max II backwards roll a couple of times.

You will love the tracks, well worth the money and effort.

Well YelloArgo, I took your advice tonight and I cut the extra one inch off. Now the metal strips are bolted against a rib at each end for my Frontier 6x6 and I put 6 lbs of air in each tire. It is definitely better but I still kind of think there is too much slack??? I'm undecided.

The length of the track pin to pin is about 188 inches. If your sure they are fine now, I'll take your advice and leave it alone for the winter. If I were to cut any more off, I'd have to cut at least two more inches by cutting off a complete rib. They were easy to put on with only a slight squeeze after letting the air out of the front and back tire only. What do you think?

Sounds right to me, the only thing I forgot to mention is that my Frontier tires are new and only used for the tracks. I like the Bigfoot 25inch, for trails in the summer. Is there much tire wear with your tires?

Cutting off the extra 2 inches sounds extreme and can dramatically tighten the tracks.

It can always be cut away, but if it is too short they do sell hinge extensions but I think you will be fine, a little loose is better then too tight.

My Frontier is brand new so there is very little wear on the tires, about 11 hrs total. I'll take your advice and leave it the way it is. Thanks for all the help.

                          tracks too long?

Just wondering if you still have the 2" spacer that came with the hinge kit installed ? Removing this and the pin will shorten your track by 2" it is designed to remove slack if you are a little long from tire wear etc... or if too short for that matter you can add one.
Great question, nearly too obvious but always best to start from the beginning to eliminate a problem, right? Looking forward to using my new tracks again. Hope the ride offer is still open.

Actually, the 2" spacer isn't installed. I still have the one that came with the kit and it is tucked away if needed. The two ends are joined without the spacer and I think it is a little too slack but I'm going to listen to YellowArgo and leave it the way it is. I followed directions perfectly and took the other guys advice to make all tires 6 lbs and the rubber itself is 188", cut off from both ends against the tread rib.

                            Thanks
