  • 2004 Avenger the good bad and the ugly

OK this is my 3rd post here after bringing home my first Argo. 2004 Avenger evidently the first year for the avenger model. the unit show 90 hours which I believe to be correct because the chains and sprockets are in great shape. However the tires have been monkeyed with and it won't swim worth a hoot. I plan to go back to all Goodyear Rawhide III tires facing the correct direction. Where is the best place to get these tires??

I quickly found out that you can go into the water just about anywhere but you have to pick a spot carfully when exiting the water.

Also the belt Squalks when turning hard in low gear and turning at all in high gear. I am going to try a new belt and cleaninig the clutch.

Are there any upgrade kits that need to be done to this unit. I have had guys tell me the brakes clutch and steeering need to be updated to newer styles. Can anyone fill me in on what these upgrades are and if thay are neccesary?

Better hurry with the Rawhide III's, they have stopped making them from what i understand.

I made a upgrade to the tension ratchets from the fine tooth to the course tooth, which keeps the front 2 chains from over tightening when the body would flex but this is all that i have done to mine except enjoy it. Mine is a 2006 model. Good luck with your machine. Have you posted up any pics?

I put some belt dressing on the belt and the inside of the clutch pulley and the squalk has stopped for now. I switched the Gator tires around but still it did not swim very well. I ordered 2 new Rawhide II tires and will put it all back the way it is supposed to be.

I have a windshield that has been broken and the frame is buggered up. Can I just order a frame, glass and hinge from Argo? All of the rest of the hardware is in good shape.

            Welcome

Early Avengers also have an upgrade available for the Trans. I believe it's an upgrade for a retainer clip on the end of one of the shafts. It's possible to "Kick/Jolt" the shifter handle, and drive the original clip off the shaft. Of course this is not a good thing. There really are no symptoms of this happening, but if you have trans problems this might be something to look into.

The belt squeal is because the trans clutch needs to be tightened. Its a fairly simple upgrade and your dealer should be able to send you the info from Argo. You will have a lot more power and no noise after this tune up.

Shipping a windshield: I hope you get it at a good price but watch the shipping.

If you buy the windshield: Please Insure it! A new one is around 750-800$ at least(They may have went up). Nearly every one that is shipped is BROKEN upon arrival. Nothing beats a brand new Busted windshield

They are not gentle with these.

Like Kahn: I have had a ball with my 2006 Avenger.

                  1. get the brake clip kit ($10 or so). Stops the brake from clicking. Best $10 I spent on my Avenger.

                  2. If cleaning does not work, put a new spring in your drive clutch. Mine was doing the same thing and i replaced it and it is a new machine. It was super esay to do. I also upgrade my driven clutch to the new EFI style. Can't say how much better it was over the original because it needed rebuilding also.

                  3. Check for play in bearings and bent axles. I have bent 4 axles in 60 hrs of riding. And I think I baby the machine. The terrain in this area is Canadian Shield and it is surprising how easy it is to bend an axle. FYI, they upgraded the axles from 2004/2005 and the new ones seem to be better. Same axle, just better steel is what my dealer said. He should know, I personally saw the pile of about 75 bent axles in his shop!

                  4. As per another post, if you machine is blowing black smoke, try putting a smaller main jet in. It made my machine run way smoother.

                  my rambling thoughts............
