I have a 2005. Same problem. Talked to the Argo dealer, he phoned Argo, they said it was a very common problem and that they were recommending bypassing the fuel accelerator pump. A few have tried that and it does help a bit. Then one of the members here from Australia told me about the "hiigh alt" kit. Smaller jet. Talked to the Argo mechanic and he confirmed that he thought the factory jet was not the correct one. I put the smaller jet from the high alt kit and the problem was completely solved.
The machine starts and runs much better and not more black smoke bellowing out!!!
The kit is about $50. I'll get the numbers for you. You can get them from Kohler cheaper also.

Were are you located and what is your elevation?Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

DOn't know if you mean me of the original poster but I am in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. Its is 600ft here but cold (-19 celcius tonight)
The argo mechanic noted that the stock jet makes the Avengers run rich for sure. He suggested going down to the smaller get. I can't remember the number but it was not that much smaller of a jet. With the original jet, black smoke bellowed out on start up, whether the engine was cold or warm. I attributed it to the accelerator pump, but when you disconnect it, it still does it. My plugs were always fouled. Since I changed the jet it is a new machine. I am watching my plugs for signs of overheating but so far, no problems.

I should correct myself, the argo rep did not say it was the incorrect jet in there, what he said was it could be too rich of a jet for where I ride. He did say that they were aware of the problem in Alberta and north, and that they had addressed it by bypassing the accelerator pump.
I don't want to give the impression that they admitted putting the wrong jet in the kohler engine from the factory.

Here is a pic of the carb setup. I don't know exactly where the acc pump is but if you change the jet, I would leave the pump in. I did and it is all working good.
