My fuel pump on my 97 Conquest is pretty noisy like it makes these clicking sounds. Is this normal?

If it is stock it would be a vacuum style. Never heard one of those click! Are you sure that it isn't something else and how are you hearing it over the engine?
They are easily replaced but i do not think that is the problem.Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , cigar in one hand, whiskey in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!!"

The fuel pump is electric and it is located above the fuel tank. It starts pumping as soon as I turn the key so it is easy to hear without even starting the engine. It is inbetween the tank and the fuel filter. Any ideas? Maybe I should by a spare to keep in the toolbox.

Fuel Pump
The Conquests have a electric fuel pump. You can hear them "clicking" when they are pressuring up. I had one go out and when it did the engine didn't want to run right under a load. It would bog out. I replaced the original with a low pressure automotive pump and it is working fine. I also was able to pick up a direct Kawasaki replacement off of ebay for a good price so now also have a spare.

Fuel Pump #'s
Here's some part #'s
Kawasaki fuel pump # 49040. List price for these are around $140.
Carequest fuel pump # E8016S. I had to find some MPT x hose fittings to get down to the correct size because the ones with the pump were too big on the hose side. Can't remeber what I paid, but much less than $140!
The carquest pump is working fine. I didn't want to pay the list price for a Argo dealer pump so I tried it. As with you I decided I then wanted an extra and bought the Kawaski pump on Ebay.
There's a Kawasaki pump on Ebay right now, current bid is $45, ends in 7 hrs. Good Luck!

I run two filters, one between the tank and electric pump and one between the pump and carby. The second one saved the carby when a fuel pump chewed itself out once.I also put a hand primer bulb in line {from a boat outboard setup}between the tank and pump.If the electric pump fails you can manually pump fuel. This saved me a very big hike once.

With your Primer Bulb, do you need a second person to keep pumping it, or can you manage that and driving at the same time?

Guess that's the time to have handlebar steeringTo Invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk. (Thomas Edison)
